Serengeti safari lodge attacked

2012-06-22 22:49

Arusha - Bandits attacked a lodge near Tanzania's fabled Serengeti National Park, killing its local manager and a Dutch tourist, the national parks authority said on Friday.

The attack took place on Wednesday and while parks officials did not elaborate on its circumstances, Tanzanian television said the bandits robbed several tourists.

"The tourist is from the Netherlands. He was killed the day before yesterday in a tented camp which is out of the Serengeti National Park," Pascal Shelutete, a spokesperson for the Tanzania national parks authority, told AFP.

"He was killed along with the assistant manager of the lodge who is a local Tanzanian," he added.

Tourism is a major source of foreign currencies for the eastern African country.

The national resources and interior ministers visited the site of the attack and extended their condolences to the tourist's widow, state television reported.

The Serengeti is known as the starting of the great migration, one of nature's most spectacular wonders which sees hundreds of thousands of wildebeest flock across to Kenya's Maasai Mara park every year.

As long as Africa is predominantly a violent and corrupt place, it will not garner more than investments for the extraction of raw materials, nor will it be prosperous. This is not racism. It's common sense. The future's in our hands. What do we want it to be?

      sally.lewitt - 2012-06-23 00:18

Most of our African governments have already \sold their souls\ read between the lines..

I say stop the western aid, let them use their traditional healers to cure malaria, cholera, typhoid, dysentery, Ebola, AIDS. They always state they don’t need the west, so let it be.

      Richard - 2012-06-23 10:15

jack.milosovic - Who are you referring to when you say "they" and "them"??

      trudy.cashel - 2012-06-23 10:51

What jack says is certainly true of many African leaders.

      Irene - 2012-06-23 15:25

      Spot on Jack.

      keesbus - 2012-06-23 20:53

I've been to Tanzania a few times over the years for both work and play (fishing) and would rate it a far safer country than ZA for sure, and this incident comes as a surprise to me. One can only speculate as to the circumstances leading up to the deaths, however I know that Tanzania takes tourism very seriously and I have no doubt that these bandits will be found / arrested / shot in short order.

Bandits have operated in the Serengeti for a long time...particularly in the Mwanza goes with the territory!! Lions get their own back though!!

  • aomtshiselwa - 2012-06-23 06:12

Whats going on in Africa? It looks like we are beginning to behave like abadoned wild animals.Human life is not valued any more

      jack.milosevic - 2012-06-23 09:21

What do you expect 95% is uneducated, running around with no moral values.

      Richard - 2012-06-23 10:11

jack.milosovic, - Africa does not have the exclusive rights to corruption and lack of moral values - You need look no further than the rampant corruption, cesspool, mafia operated state that is Russia (where you're from), italy, and many other European countries.....

      trudy.cashel - 2012-06-23 10:36

It's distressing when people compare bad human behavior to that of animals. Animals are far more evolved and respectful of fellow earthlings than most people. Please use another comparison because this one is ignorant and untrue.

      andre.sunnasy - 2012-06-23 20:45

Hey Jack, what do you mean "95% is uneducated" it is "95% are un educated", talk about being uneducated...

  • Al Rost-Felder - 2012-06-23 07:26

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-23 08:09

  • hendrikvs - 2012-06-23 08:57

Not much different to South Africa. Barbarians!!

  • Bosvark Van Rensburg - 2012-06-23 09:02

@ Dennis, Russel and spartax. I believe when it suits you thats when you call yourselves Africans. Grow up kids or go play somewhere else. people lost their lives here to pure crime and you start with your racial cancer disease.

      Richard - 2012-06-23 10:18

Great point. We are all Africans. This is a criminal act with tragic consequences, and should not be used to score cheap points for racial hatred...

  • Barend - 2012-06-23 09:07

There are people who would do these things all over the World. The only difference is that in Africa they get away with it.

      PJP - 2012-06-23 19:52

Star - you hit the nail on the head. Of course there are similiar stories elesewhere, but NOWHERE is it considered acceptable. At least not in civilized countries that wish to join ranks with other civilized democratic countries. I honestly think SA is not yet ready for civilization in terms of the rest of the world and certainly not democracy. Shame - it is such a beautiful place (some of the species not withstanding)

  • gillian.sanderson - 2012-06-23 09:47

bad news indeed. imagine the cancellations.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-06-23 19:32

Yes, and with the perception many would be visitors have of Africa, it even effects tourism , here in SA !!!

  • ec.van.niekerk - 2012-06-23 19:08

full marks africa ... lets show the world how murderous you are. *sarcastic*

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-06-24 09:18

Clearly you ignorant muppets have never been elsewhere if you believe murders only happen in Africa.

      stirer.kathray - 2012-06-24 10:03

Not on the same scale. What other country has 1440 farmers murdered in 20 years?

      millionwatts1 - 2012-06-24 10:17

But in Tanzania they did not murder 1440 tourists which is what this story is about.
