United Nations - The United Nations secretary-general is welcoming the latest cease-fire agreement between South Sudan's warring sides but regrets that they haven't agreed on a way to share power.

The spokesperson for Ban Ki-moon told reporters on Tuesday that South Sudan will have no peace if President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar don't put the needs of civilians above their own.

Spokesman Stephane Dujarric says the UN has no information on any new military activity since South Sudan's rivals signed the latest peace deal early on Monday. At least three previous agreements quickly fell apart in the oil-rich east African country.

South Sudan's government and the rebels have agreed to conclude a comprehensive agreement to end the crisis before 5 March.

Thousands have been killed since fighting broke out December 2013.
