Addis Ababa - A top US aid official says the US will donate more than $121m to Ethiopia to fight food insecurity amid a drought in the East African nation.

Usaid director Raj Shah said Tuesday during a visit to Ethiopia's capital that the US will provide $110m to a programme that will benefit 1.5 million people. He says another $10m will be spent on a nutrition programme and $1.2m given in loans to encourage farmers.

More than 4.5 million Ethiopians need food assistance. East Africa's drought has developed into a famine in neighbouring Somalia. The UN says 750 000 people are in danger of dying over the next few months. The UN estimates tens of thousands have died already.

Generous as usual, notwithstanding the country's financial challenges.

Is the AU going to say thanks? Is Zuma going to explain the outcome of the AU meetings to help Somalia? As always Africa unsuccessful leaders and their failed strategies cannot do anything for their people. The imperialists are the saviours of Africa.

No doubt for allowing a base for US drones to operate from that country that will target and kill other Africans, bloody sellouts.

How much is China giving? @Libertador Just withholding food aid would kill many more than the drones could ever do. By saying Africans, I wonder if you don't mean militants who are actually stimulating the horrors in this region against fellow Africans.

Why should China give anything? If you understood what western aid is then you wouldn't be asking that silly question( Look up John Perkins or Stephen Brown). China is sharing its technology with Africa. What Africa needs is trade, not aid, i.e the west getting rid of trade barriers where Africa is competative. Look up the story of the Mali cotton farmers. If you look at the flow of money from Europe to Africa, and from Africa to Europe, you would notice that the latter is much *higher* than former. Why is this so ? You may want to get out of that mindset before you attempt to debate someone of my knowledge level. I feel no obligation to educate you.
