Harare - The last colonial prime minister of Zimbabwe, Ian Smith, has undergone hip surgery in a Cape Town hospital in South Africa, two newspapers reported on Thursday.

Smith, 85, who was prime minister of Rhodesia from 1965 to 1979, reportedly had surgery to correct a discomfort arising from a previous hip replacement operation, the state-run Herald and independent Daily Mirror reported.

A man reached at Smith's house situated in the upmarket Harare suburb of Belgravia on Thursday refused to comment on the reports.

Smith reportedly left Zimbabwe for South Africa in January to seek treatment and had planned to return at the end of February, according to a member of his household staff quoted in the reports.
