Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma has criticised Mozambican ex-rebel group Renamo for spurning President Armando Gurbuza's invite for face-to-face peace talks to end skirmishes currently rocking the country.

Chaos erupted after Renamo withdrew from a 1992 peace deal to fight Guebuza's government.

SABC reported on Friday that Renamo's rejection of the peace talks were ill conceived, adding its leader Afonso Dhlakama must at some point be given an ultimatum to stop the killing of innocent people.

Zuma's remarks come at a time when Zimbabwe has reportedly beefed up security along its borders with Mozambique amid fears the situation in Mozambique might escalate into a civil war.

According to the country's defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi, Zimbabwe was closely monitoring the situation but had not deployed any troops yet.

Zimbabwe has made it clear that it won't hesitate to back Guebuza's Frelimo party if Renamo resorts to violence.
