Lusaka - Zambia President Edgar Lungu has said that his government will have a difficult time stopping violence ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.

According to Zambian Post, Lungu said this on Tuesday during an inter-party meeting to discuss political violence in the state.

Although Lungu expressed optimism about the discussions yielding positive results, he also said that putting an end to violence during the elections would not be an easy task.

"The journalists are asking me what next; the next thing is to implement whatever we have agreed upon during the meeting. So we are just praying that it works… it will be difficult, but we will manage," said Lungu.

This came as opposition members tasked Lungu with putting an end to political violence, claiming that he had the power to make a change.

The opposition has in the past few day been constantly brutally attacked by security personnel in the southern African country.

According to a previous News24 report, former president Guy Scott called on Lungu to step down from his position if he was not able to curb the violence, which he claimed was being instigated by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Scott told Lungu that the ongoing political violence in the country was "annoying".
