Kitui - A 36-year-old lab technician at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya has been arrested after attempting to help a 21-year-old woman procure an abortion.

Charles Kilonzi was arrested at the Mwingi Makuti Lodging in Kitui County following a tip-off  from members of the public.

Citizen TV identified the woman as Eunice Mueni, adding that the two would be arraigned in court soon.

Abortion is illegal in Kenya, this, forcing most women to resort to risky procedures to terminate unwanted pregnancies.

Reports indicate that at least 300 000 pregnancies are conducted in the country every year.
