Nairobi - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta's family has reportedly given out 2 000 acres of land to squatters living in one of the country's counties, Taita Taveta.

According to The Star, the larger family of president Kenyatta decided to hive off 2 000 of their 30 000  acre farm to try and solve the chronic land issue in the coastal region.

The squatters will be issued with title deeds in a few months, spokesperson Manoah Esipisu told a press conference at State House, Mombasa, on Thursday.

Esipisu said the donation was purely a personal effort by the family and that it would be divided bwtween the most pressing cases.

The president had previously promised to hand out the piece of land during the 2013 election campaign period, after he was criticised by his opponents for owning "too much idle land".

According to the Daily Nation, the move by Kenyatta's family was meant to show "leadership by example'. The report said it (the move) was also meant to solve an issue that had been in existence since independence.

"The title deeds will be issued in the coming months. We ask that there be patience exercised as those that are most in need are identified," Esipisu was quoted as saying.
