Nyeri - A Kenyan woman, who lost her baby during delivery at Nyeri Level 5 Hospital in 2014, gave birth while standing up, as nurses failed to attend to her, it has been revealed.

Charity Wanjiku's baby fell onto the floor head first as nurses at the facility ignored her pleas for help, leading to the death of the newborn boy.

She said that nurses were sleeping when the incident occurred.

However, doctors at the facility blamed the incident on a shortage of nurses.

According to Daily Nation, the current patient to nurse ratio in the country is 1:1 250.

The recommended ratio of nurse to patient is 1:6 for admitted patients and 1:35 for out-patients.

This acute shortage of staff has seen available nurses work for long hours, a development that has compromised caregiving, especially in public hospitals.

Patients, especially pregnant women, bear the brunt of neglect, with some reporting harassment and abuse by the caregivers.

Besides a shortage of staff, poor training has also been cited as a factor for the witnessed poor service delivery in public hospitals.
