Lusaka – A 24-year-old woman has been arrested in Zambia for allegedly stabbing her 9-month-old baby before dumping it in a pit latrine, a report says.

According to Tumfweko, Delphister Mulenga stabbed the toddler with a sharp object before dumping it in the pit latrine.

Police said the incident happened late on Sunday at around 17:00 at the suspect’s house.

The baby's body had since been retrieved.

Mulenga was arrested after members of the public got wind of the incident and notified the police.

According to Lusaka Time, in 2012, a 15-year-old boy saved a day-old baby after it was dumped into a pit latrine by its mother.

The baby weighing 3.4kg, was thrown into an 8-metre-deep pit latrine by its mother in a bid to kill it.

The infant was, however, retrieved alive by the "courageous" teenage boy after being lowered into the pit latrine by a rope.
