Kampala - Ugandans have expressed disappointment over President Yoweri Museveni's absence from the country's first ever live presidential debate on Friday last week, Daily Monitor reports.

Many in Uganda felt that Museveni should have been present for the debate to justify his 30-year rule to the opposition.

A boda-boda driver in Lira Town, Bonny Ogal, questioned why Museveni was a no-show.

"As his supporter, I wanted him to enumerate various achievements of his government... He has disappointed me, yet I have been voting him," Ogal was quoted as saying.

The first live debate saw several presidential candidates pleading their cases, without the presence of the head of the East African nation.

Museveni’s reason for not attending the debate was that "speech competitions should be left to high school students".

The debate was attended by Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, Maureen Kyalya, Kizza Besigye, Joseph Mabirizi, Major General Benon Biraaro and Amama Mbabazi.

While some people expressed disappointment, a local produce dealer, Charles Ojok, said that Museveni was smart not to attend because he would have made himself a laughing stock.

Locals took to Twitter to express their views on the matter:

@kezio_musoke said: Museveni has feared the live debate becoz he knows he will be thoroughly embarassed...

@Kwezi_Tabaro posted: Biggest take away from the debate today: Uganda can, and will, still exist without Museveni. There! I said it!
