Cairo -The search is continuing for three people missing after a boat sank on the River Nile.

Egypt's state-run news agency reported earlier that 14 bodies had been retrieved after the ferry sank while transporting people between villages in the Nile Delta province of Kafr el-Sheikh.

MENA says search efforts for at least three more people believed to have been on the boat continued on Friday.

The report adds that villagers gathered on the Nile banks in anger after the boat capsized, but police "contained the situation."

Egypt's social solidarity minister ordered the payment of about $1 300 to each family of the deceased.

An earlier Cairo report said the boat had been an unlicensed ferry and quoted the provincial governor Al-Sayed Nasr as saying  that the boat, which was not licensed to work as a ferry, had been too small to accommodate the passengers.

The accident came months after at least 36 Egyptians were killed when a party boat collided with a cargo ship in the Nile.
