Lilongwe - The president of the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Lazarus Chakwera, has accused President Peter Mutharika of being "sarcastic" about the hardships currently facing Malawians.

According to Nyasa Times, Mutharika made a statement jokingly at a public meeting on Saturday in Blantyre, saying "Ine ndilibe problem" which translates to "I have no problems".

Mutharika said this, as he tried to play down pressure from opposition and critics calling for his resignation.

However, at a rally in Lilongwe, Chakwera criticised Mutharika for laughing in the face of the problems faced by Malawians.

"It's a mockery to Malawians that despite scarcity of maize in Admarc depots, water problems, shortage of medicine in public hospitals, rising prices of good, economic hardship Malawians are facing, Mutharika can boldly stand and say he has no problems," Chakwera was quoted as saying.

Patrick Chilondola, the MCP's central region chaiperson, also weighed in, saying that Mutharika and his associates did not know the struggles faced by ordinary Malawians.

Chilondola accused Mutharika of caring more about his power and status than the well-being of the country.

Opposition parties last week gave Mutharika an ultimatum of three months in which they said he should resign for failing to solve the country's economic problems.
