Ex-Grace Mugabe ally vows to return to Zim after 6-month exile

A key ally of Grace Mugabe is set to return to Zimbabwe six months after he fled into exile in the wake of the military takeover, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Speaking to the Zimbabwe edition of South Africa's Sunday Times, former local government minister Saviour Kasukuwere said that he is prepared to return to Harare as "early as this week" and face possible criminal charges. The minister met the paper's journalists at a hotel in Ekurhuleni: it was not clear where exactly he's been staying in South Africa until now.

Mugabe 'sends emissaries for coalition talks with MDC leader Chamisa' – report

Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa has reportedly been "approached by emissaries claiming to represent former president Robert Mugabe and seeking an electoral pact". 

According to The Standard newspaper, leaders from the newly formed Mugabe backed party, the National Patriotic Front (NPF), met with Chamisa at his office in Harare to discuss a possible pact between the dethroned veteran leader with the MDC-T leader.

The meeting had since created divisions within the NPF, as some members were said to have been left out from the negotiations.

Zim government shelves plans to licence cannabis growers: report

The Zimbabwe government has put on hold plans to issue licences to farmers to grow marijuana for medical and research purposes, citing the need to first carry out feasibility studies.

Deputy Finance Minister Terence Mukupe says the state Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) had received more than 350 applications from local and foreign growers since the government published new regulations for growing the crop commercially.

"MCAZ has put on hold licensing until they are pretty clear in terms of all the modalities like: how do we actually implement?," Mukupe told the private Daily News on Sunday.

$15bn diamond looting: Zim parliament summons Mugabe to May 23 hearing

A Zimbabwe parliament committee has summoned former president Robert Mugabe to give evidence on Wednesday about diamond corruption alleged to have cost billions of dollars during his rule.

Mugabe, who was ousted from office in November after a brief military takeover, has not commented on whether he will appear before the committee.

A parliamentary notice for May 23 was released on Monday.

"Subject to confirmation, oral evidence from His Excellency, the former president of the Republic of Zimbabwe, comrade RG Mugabe, on diamond mining revenues," it read.

Nurse dead in DRC as Ebola vaccination campaign starts

Democratic republic of Congo's health minister says a nurse has died from Ebola in Bikoro, the rural northwestern town where the outbreak began, as the country begins a vaccination campaign.

Health Minister Oly Ilunga said late on Sunday that the nurse's death brings the death toll to 27. There are now 49 hemorrhagic fever cases: 22 confirmed as Ebola, 21 probable and 6 suspected.

Ilunga said two patients have recovered from Ebola, returning home.

Zimbabwe applies to rejoin Commonwealth

Zimbabwe has applied to rejoin the Commonwealth, the group said on Monday, marking a major step in the country's international re-engagement after Robert Mugabe was ousted last year.

Mugabe angrily pulled Zimbabwe out of the bloc of former British colonies in 2003 after its membership was suspended over violent and graft-ridden elections the previous year.

The Commonwealth said it had received a letter dated May 15 from Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa applying to re-join.
