Air Namibia plane impounded as Zim man sues for $1m

A Zimbabwean man is trying to sue Air Namibia for $1m after airline officials allegedly barred him and his family from travelling to Turkey.

The pending court action saw an Air Namibia plane impounded in Harare on Friday, disrupting travel plans for dozens of Windhoek-bound passengers.

‘Pain, suffering and trauma’

Harare High Court Judge Tawanda Chitapi authorised the sheriff of the court to attach Air Namibia’s property, including planes, pending the finalisation of the case in which Zimbabwean family man Chenjerai Mawumba is suing the airline for "pain, suffering and trauma".

Mugabe's son-in-law 'wanted by police': report

Former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s son-in-law is wanted by police on allegations he detained a senior airline company official against her will, a newspaper reported.

Simba Chikore allegedly had Zimbabwe Airways legal head Bertha Zakeyo detained for two hours at the airline’s offices in June.

One of Chikore’s alleged accomplices, security guard Simbarashe Mutimbe appeared at the Harare Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. He was granted bail of $30, reports The Standard

2018 'a tough year for MDC', says Chamisa as he mourns Tsvangirai's brother – reports

Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has reportedly described 2018 as a tough year for his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, Chamisa said this in a statement as he comforted the Tsvangirai family following the death of former MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai's brother, Casper.

Casper died over the weekend in Kwekwe.

Nigeria's Buhari to face political heavyweight opponent in re-election bid

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will run for re-election in February 2019 against former vice president Atiku Abubakar, a Muslim from the country's north who was nominated on Sunday as the main opposition party's poll contender.

Buhari, a 75-year-old former military ruler, was the sole candidate for his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, so his confirmation by some 7 000 delegates gathered in the capital Abuja was a mere formality on Saturday.

The APC swept to power in 2015 with the first opposition victory at the ballot box in the country's history.

South Sudan inmates seize control of prison

More than a dozen inmates have disarmed prison guards and seized part of a notorious detention centre in South Sudan's capital Juba, officials said on Sunday.

A detained officer of the National Security Service (NSS) overpowered a guard at the entrance of the Blue House compound and disarmed him in overnight, the NSS said in a statement.

After opening the prison gate by firing shots at the locks, Captain Keribino Wol then "mobilised" 15 detainees and "took over one part of the prison" where he forced several inmates to form a human shield to protect him from NSS officers, according to the statement.
