Zimbabweans 'apologise' to SA over Grace Mugabe 'wrath'

Harare- A group of prominent Zimbabwean political activists on Wednesday apologised to South Africans following the recent assault of a 20 year-old model at a Sandton hotel by President Robert Mugabe’s wife Grace.

This came at a time when the Zimbabwean First Lady was yet to make any public pronouncements regarding the issue.

The Zimbabwean First Lady allegedly assaulted Gabriella Engels with an extension cord and severely injured her after she found her in the company of one of her two sons living and learning in South Africa, Bellarmine Chatunga. The Mugabe brothers were known for their notoriety and lavish spending.

Russian ambassador to Sudan found dead in swimming pool

Khartoum - Russia's ambassador to Sudan, veteran diplomat Mirgayas Shirinsky, was found dead in the swimming pool at his Khartoum home on Wednesday, Sudanese and Russian officials said.

"The Russian ambassador died this evening at his Khartoum residence," the Sudanese foreign ministry said in a statement, without giving a cause of death.

"He was found dead in the swimming pool of his residence at 19:05 pm," police spokesperson Omar al-Mokhtar told AFP.

Mbeki: Situation in DRC 'is worrying, SADC must act'

Boksburg – Former President Thabo Mbeki has reportedly said that the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is "worrying", adding that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) must act to avoid the killing of more people.

Mbeki said this just before the start of the African Leadership Forum meeting which he would be co-hosting with Tanzania’s former president Benjamin Mkapa in Boksburg.

The meeting was set to run from August 24-25.

SA pledges R8m to Sierra Leone following deadly mudslide

ohannesburg – South Africa has pledged R8 million to assist the west African country of Sierra Leone following a deadly mudslide.

More than 400 people were killed in the mountain town of Regent on the outskirts of the capital Freetown. The mudslide swept away homes and left residents desperate for news of missing family members.

As many as 600 were still missing and about 3 000 were left homeless.

'Robert Mugabe day an insult to Zimbabweans,' - opposition

Harare – Zimbabwe's main opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, has expressed "shock and complete disappointment" over a recent decision by government to declare President Robert Mugabe's birthday a holiday. 

In a statement, MDC's Spokesperson Obert Gutu described the decision as an "insult to Zimbabweans", adding that his party would scrap the holiday if elected into power.

Angola awaits election results amid opposition complaints

Johannesburg - Angolans are awaiting the results of an election in which the defence minister is the front-runner to succeed President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who will quit after 38 years in power.

While election officials say Wednesday's vote went smoothly despite minor problems, the main opposition UNITA party alleges that police fired shots and made arrests near some polling stations as people voted in Huambo city.
