MDC says Zim 'now a regional security threat'… asks SADC to intervene – report

Zimbabwe's opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, has reportedly said that the country is "fast degenerating into a regional security threat as its economic situation worsens".

According to NewsDay, the MDC said it had petitioned the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU) to intervene in bringing the country’s worsening state under control.

MDC spokesperson, Jacob Mafume said that the party would go on a regional offensive to discuss the country's state with regional leaders.

Ebola spreads to major DRC city as vaccines a concern

The second-largest Ebola outbreak in history has spread to a major city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as health experts worry whether the stock of an experimental vaccine will stand up to the demands of an epidemic with no end in sight.

Butembo, with more than 1 million residents, is now reporting cases of the deadly hemorrhagic fever. That complicates Ebola containment work already challenged by rebel attacks elsewhere that have made tracking the virus almost impossible in some isolated villages.

"We are very concerned by the epidemiological situation in the Butembo area," said John Johnson, project coordinator with Medecins Sans Frontieres in the city. New cases are increasing quickly in the eastern suburbs and outlying, isolated districts, the medical charity said.

Top Kenyan officials arrested over 'spilled' petrol

The director of the Kenya Pipeline Company and four others have been arrested after millions of litres of petrol went missing in dubious circumstances, police said on Friday.

In October, 10 leading fuel marketers demanded an independent audit of KPC's stock, suspecting up to 20 million litres had gone missing, with much of it falsely declared as "spillage", and believed to have been stolen.

"We have five KPC officers including (managing director Joe) Sang in custody and we are processing them for their appearance in court," said a senior detective involved in the arrest, who asked not to be named.

Morocco meeting to adopt UN migration pact despite withdrawals

Representatives from around the globe are gearing up for a major conference in Morocco to endorse a United Nations migration pact, despite a string of countries shunning the accord.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was finalised at the UN in July following 18 months of negotiations and will be formally adopted at the two-day gathering in Marrakesh starting Monday.

The non-binding UN accord, which aims to promote a common approach to growing migrant flows, has become a target for populist politicians who denounce it as an affront to national sovereignty.

Zim won't be turned into 'old people's home', MDC youths tell war veterans

Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) youth assembly has reportedly vowed to thwart the alleged plan by the country's war veterans to have a constitutional amendment to revise the minimum age of any aspiring president to 52.

According to Daily News, the influential Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association has proposed that parliament raise the minimum age for presidential aspirants from 40-years to 52 ahead of the ruling Zanu-PF conference next week.

The motion is widely seen as targeted at the MDC presidential candidate in the just ended election in which Nelson Chamisa, 40, narrowly lost against President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The planned constitutional amendment would likely prevent Chamisa from contesting for power in the country’s next election in 2023.
