Mnangagwa spends more than half a million US 'to mend fences with Mugabes': report

A private newspaper in Zimbabwe says President Emmerson Mnangagwa spent more than half a million US dollars to fly former first lady Grace Mugabe home to attend her mother’s funeral.

The $550 000 was used to charter a top-of-the range jet from a company in Qatar, said the private Standard newspaper.

“The money, it has been established, was sourced by a local business tycoon with vast interests in energy, mining and agriculture, who is close to Mnangagwa,” the paper said.

Grace was reported to be unwell and in Singapore last month. She was still there when her 83-year-old mother, Idah Marufu, died in Harare on August 30.

Grace Mugabe: 'I was touched by Mnangagwa's kindness… he said I'm his mother'

Grace Mugabe says she has been touched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's kindness after the 75-year-old wrote a letter to her addressing her as his mother, and paid all of her own mother’s funeral expenses.

The former first lady, who was credited with getting Mnangagwa sacked last November, triggering the military takeover that ousted her husband from power, said Mnangagwa was “a human being just like you and me”.

“The president wrote a letter to me and showed his love, he said I am his mother and he will never let me down,” the private Standard newspaper quoted her as telling mourners on Saturday at the burial of her mother, Idah Marufu, who died last month.

Zimbabwe seeks return to dollar as new govt sworn in

Zimbabwe's newly sworn-in finance minister on Monday said he planned to reintroduce the Zimbabwe dollar and accelerate plans to repay the country's debt, in a bid to revive the battered economy.

The southern African nation abandoned its currency after it spiralled out of control between 2008 and 2009 during the rule of Robert Mugabe.

The country adopted the US greenback and other foreign currencies including the South African rand. But a few years later, with the economy in tatters, US bank notes started to run short.
