Don't be like Grace, Zimbabwe's Mnangagwa warns wife

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned his wife and his vice president's wife to steer clear of politics to avoid being like Grace Mugabe, the shopaholic, insult-spouting wife of former Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe.

A similar demand by opposition leader Nelson Chamisa to his own wife has triggered angry comments on social media.

On Saturday Mnangagwa told a fund-raising dinner in Harare that his and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga's rallies were "not for the ladies".

"Just a few months ago, we had (rallies), where both the (former) First Lady and the President were talking. We don’t want that to be repeated. Let it be a platform which is mine and my vice-presidents' only and not for the ladies. It's wrong," Mnangagwa said in comments carried by the private NewsDay

EXPOSED: Zim opposition MDC's 'dirty machinations'

Zimbabwean Movement for Democratic Change's deputy youth leader, Shakespeare Mukoyi, has reportedly revealed the "dirty machinations" that were used "to propel the party's new leadership following the death of its long-time leader Morgan Tsvangirai".

According to NewsDay, Mukoyi, who is also the leader of the self-confessed militia within the party - the Vanguard - dropped the bombshell following claims that there was a plot to block him from contesting the Kuwadzana east constituency.

He claimed that the constituency had apparently been given to him by the party's presidential candidate, Nelson Chamisa, as a "token of appreciation" after he he helped him ascend to the party's presidency.

Missing $15bm diamond revenue: Zim parly gives Mugabe ultimatum, says report

The Zimbabwean parliament has reportedly issued an ultimatum to former president Robert Mugabe after he failed on Monday to attend a parliamentary hearing where he was due to give evidence on corruption in the diamond mining industry.

Lawmakers wanted to question Mugabe, 94, over his 2016 claim that Zimbabwe lost $15 billion in revenue due to corruption and foreign exploitation in the diamond sector.

The nonagenarian, who was ousted from office in November after 37 years in power, also failed to attend the hearing last week without giving reasons.

Nigeria to cut age limits for political candidates

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said he would approve a new law to reduce the age limit for political office, raising the prospect of younger candidates at next year's general election.

"In [a] few days to come, I will be joined by many promising young Nigerians to sign into law the 'Not Too Young To Run' bill," he said in a speech to mark the country's annual Democracy Day public holiday.

The bill was passed by both houses of parliament last year and later received the constitutionally required approval of two-thirds of state legislatures, leaving the final step of presidential assent.
