'It's a non-issue': Minister pooh-poohs Air Zimbabwe Europe ban

Harare - Zimbabwe's transport minister has pooh-poohed news that the national carrier has been banned from Europe, arguing that only two planes are affected, it was reported on Thursday.

The ban, which was announced by the European Commission, got Zimbabweans talking on Wednesday.

That's not least because President Robert Mugabe always uses Air Zimbabwe AND his son-in-law Simba Chikore is the chief operations officer of the carrier.

WATCH: Video of Mugabe, 93, struggling to climb small staircase goes viral

Harare – A video showing Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe struggling to climb a small staircase at the National Heroes's Acre in Harare has gone viral.

The video was recently recorded by SABC at the burial of former chief justice Godfrey Chidyausiku.

The video shows Mugabe, 93, climbing the staircase while balancing on the railings with both hands.

Kenya health authorities issue alert over cholera in capital

Nairobi - A Kenyan health official says the government has issued an alert over a cholera outbreak in the capital after five cases of the disease were confirmed and three other suspected cases were being investigated.

Nairobi County Health Executive Bernard Muia said on Thursday the disease came from travellers from the town of Vihiga in western Kenya who were in Nairobi for a wedding.

Macron visits French troops in Mali's restive north

Gao - President Emmanuel Macron visited French troops fighting jihadists in conflict-torn Mali on Friday and urged faster progress on a peace accord signed in 2015.

At the end of his first week in office, Macron flew into Gao, a city in Mali's deeply-troubled north, where he was met by his Malian counterpart Ibrahim Boubacar Keita before sitting down for talks.

Macron was keen to display his defence and security credentials with around 1 600 French soldiers stationed in Gao at France's largest foreign base, part of the larger "Barkhane" counter-terror force operating across the Sahel region.

Boko Haram traps starving people in Nigeria, UN warns

Rome - Two million people are teetering on the brink of famine in northeastern Nigeria but efforts to reach some are being thwarted by Boko Haram jihadists, the UN's food agency said Thursday.

More than 20 million people across Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia and Yemen, are in areas hit by drought and are experiencing famine or are at high risk of famine in "the biggest crisis we have seen in the past 50 years", said Denise Brown, emergency coordinator for the UN's World Food Programme.

Sudan's Bashir to skip Trump-Muslim summit

Khartoum - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, will not join an Islamic summit in Saudi Arabia with US President Donald Trump, his office said on Friday.

"President Omar al-Bashir has apologised to King Salman of Saudi Arabia for being unable to attend the Riyadh summit," a statement from his office carried by the official SUNA news agency said.

It said he had been unable to accept the king's invitation for "personal reasons".
