US tourist injured in Vic Falls hippo attack

A US tourist has been injured by a hippo while canoeing above the Victoria Falls, a newspaper reported.

Thirty-seven-year-old Christine Yaldor was canoeing with her husband on Saturday morning when the attacked occurred, said the state-run Sunday News.

"They came too close to the hippo and it panicked and attacked their boat," an unnamed eyewitness told the paper.

Africans played key, often unheralded, role in World War I

Amid the fanfare marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, little has been said about crucial participants in the conflict: Africans.

More than 1 million African soldiers, labourers and porters were vital actors in the war in Europe and especially in battles on the African continent, yet little commemorates their role.

This is slowly changing as historians and artists highlight contributions made by Africans in the war from 1914 to 1918.

Army clashes with rebels kill 18 in eastern DRC

Clashes between the army and rebels loyal to a renegade former general in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have killed at least 18 people, military sources said on Monday.

Fighting killed 14 rebels and four soldiers in Fizi, a region of South Kivu, a mineral-rich province which is prone to ethnic tensions, the sources said.

The unrest is another front by rebels opposed to President Joseph Kabila as the poverty-stricken Democratic Republic of Congo prepares for a much-delayed presidential election on December 23.

Nigerian president denies rumours of his death

Nigeria's president took the extraordinary step of denying rumours that he died and was replaced by a body double, telling the country that he is alive and well.

"It is the real me I assure you," President Muhammadu Buhari said on Sunday to a group of Nigerians during a visit to Poland, where he is attending the United Nations Climate Conference.

"A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health," Buhari said. "I am still going strong."

Morocco king meets Gabon president in hospital

Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Monday visited Gabon's President Ali Bongo at a military hospital in Rabat where the Gabonese leader is recovering from an illness, an official source said.

During the visit, the king said he was pleased about the state of Bongo's health which he said was getting better by the day, according to the Moroccan source.

The Moroccan Royal Palace issued a handout picture of King Mohammed sitting next to Bongo who was smiling at him and dressed in a turban and djellaba robe.
