'We'll give Mnangagwa a lucrative pension and he will be the happiest man,' says opposition leader

Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has promised President Emmerson Mnangagwa a "lucrative pension package" should he win the forthcoming polls, a privately owned-newspaper has said. 

The Daily News quoted the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance presidential candidate as saying that Mnangagwa would be the "happiest person because we are going to to give him a lucrative pension".

Zimbabwe was set to go to the polls on July 30. These would be the first elections to be held without the participation of longtime leader Robert Mugabe.

'Anger' as Zim leader fails to turn up for scheduled rally days after bomb blast – report

Zimbabwean Zanu-PF party supporters in Hwange have reportedly expressed anger after President Emmerson Mnangagwa backed out of his first campaign rally since Saturday's deadly attack.

AP reported on Wednesday that an official announced to a packed stadium in Hwange that Mnangagwa was no longer attending the rally, without giving details.

The stadium was under tight security, with soldiers and police searching everyone who entered. Unlike at previous rallies, supporters were not allowed close to the VIP tent.

Zim to extradite 3 for alleged murder of wheelchair-bound SA man

Three Zimbabwe men accused of murdering their wheelchair-bound South African employer and burning his body will be extradited to face justice in South Africa, a state newspaper says.

Pfigamani Perfect Muleya, Jeffrey Mpofu and Owen Gumbo were arrested after they escaped back to Zimbabwe, said the state-run Chronicle.

The trio allegedly hit 41-year-old Randburg resident Graeme Shellerd on the head with a blunt object on June 4, 2016. Shellerd, a paraplegic, is said to have died on the spot. The trio then allegedly assaulted his girlfriend Leigh Champman and left her for dead.

Concerns of election violence in Zimbabwe

As Zimbabweans gear up to vote for a new leader on July 30, there are concerns that the upcoming elections could be marred by widespread violence.

Speaking to reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday, Civil Society leaders from Zimbabwe said the elections in their country were going to take place in an "environment where the security of citizens is still a major issue".

The briefing comes after Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa survived a blast at a ruling Zanu-PF party rally at the weekend.

Market fire kills 15, injures 70 in Kenya, as rescue workers search for more bodies

A fire at Nairobi's Gikomba market killed 15 people on Thursday, a government official said, less than a year after a blaze to destroyed much of the Kenyan capital's largest open-air market.

"We have lost 15 people from this tragedy this morning," said regional co-ordinator Kangethe Thuku.

"We're yet to establish the cause of this fire," he said, which is believed to have started in a timber yard.

Nigerian, 35, takes a shot at 2019 presidential vote

A 35-year-old Nigerian on Thursday said he wants to become the country's youngest presidential candidate, taking advantage of a newly passed law reducing age limits for political office.

"Chike Ukaegbu announced his candidacy for President of Nigeria - a country with over 60% of the population between the ages of 18 and 35," his publicist said in a statement.
