Girl, 10, killed by lion while relieving herself at the back of a hut

Harare - A 10 year-old girl has been killed by a lion outside her home in south-eastern Zimbabwe, reports said on Tuesday.

Her aunt used a torch to follow a trail of blood to find the girl’s body, said the state-run Chronicle.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in the wildlife-rich Chiredzi district. A police spokesperson said Mitchell Mucheni had gone round the back of the house to relieve herself while her aunt, 34-year-old Mawonei Muchacha waited for her.

Zim taxi driver in hot water after signing traffic fine 'Vote MDC'

Harare – A Zimbabwean taxi driver has landed himself in trouble after signing his traffic ticket "vote MDC", says a report.

According to New, Malter Matchiya was charged with contravening sections of the criminal law and was fined at least $10 for his "cheeky" behaviour.

Matchiya was reportedly also struggling to find employment after being fired by his boss, who allegedly feared that his taxi could be set alight by ruling Zanu-PF supporters.

Zimbabwe's election to cost more than $270m

Harare – Zimbabwe will reportedly need at least $274m to fund next year's presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to New, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), chairperson Rita Makarau has told the women affairs committee of parliament that she believes the financial squeezed treasury will be able to bankroll the polls.

Former Zambian leader Kenneth Kaunda, 93, is hospitalised

Johannesburg -  Zambian media say 93-year-old Kenneth Kaunda, the country's independence leader and former longtime president, is hospitalised.

State broadcaster ZNBC reported on Wednesday that Kaunda was admitted Tuesday evening to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, the capital.

ZNBC quotes Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya as saying Kaunda is in stable condition after "minor complaints" and could leave the hospital by Thursday.

Protesters arrested for burning Museveni T-shirts

Two people who were protesting an allegedly planned constitutional amendment to allow President Yoweri Museveni, 72, to run again in 2021 have been arrested at Uganda's capital, Kampala, says a report.

According to Daily Monitor, the two men burnt tyres and T-shirts with the president’s face on them as they protested the allegedly planned constitutional amendment to change the current age limit.

The protesters shouted: "Museveni must go. His time is over and no one should tamper with the constitution."

Top Boko Boko Haram leader surrenders to Nigerian military

Lagos – A high ranking Boko Haram leader and three other extremists reportedly handed themselves over to the Nigerian military early this week.

According to Premium Times, Boko Haram leader Konto Fanami, and three other members willingly handed themselves over to the army on Monday.

In a statement, military spokesperson Sani Usman said that Boko Haram had "deserted their hideouts and surrendered themselves to 120 Task Force Battalion at Goniri in Borno".

Mugabe,Tsvangirai to campaign in Matabeleland

Harare – Zimbabwe's ageing President Robert Mugabe and his arch-rival Morgan Tsvangirai are expected to go up against each other in Matabeleland West this Friday, as they address separate rallies to drum up support for the crunch 2018 elections, says a report.

According to NewsDay, Mugabe is expected to address a Zanu-PF youth rally in Lupane, while his long-time rival Tsvangirai would be updating the party’s Bulawayo provincial structures on the ongoing coalition talks with other opposition parties.
