New York - The UN Human Rights Council is strongly condemning recent deadly clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid political turmoil and is calling on the government and electoral commission to establish a calendar for elections "as fast as possible".

The commission has decided that the presidential election scheduled for November won't be possible, sparking deadly clashes between security forces and demonstrators who say the delayed vote is an effort to keep President Joseph Kabila in power.

A resolution adopted by the Geneva-based council on Friday "strongly urges" the government to peacefully resolve the political issues that led to the recent violence, particularly in the capital Kinshasa, "and avoid additional confrontation".

It also called on the government to create "without delay the necessary conditions for holding free, transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections."
