Parts of Kibera, a slum on the outskirts of the Kenyan capital which houses at least 400 000 people, are being destroyed as authorities seek to build a new road.

Residents told Reuters that the demolitions have caught them by surprise.

"Most of my things have been destroyed, including my TV. All my property is here and I don't know where to go with my children," one of the residents says.

Al Jazeera reports that the destroyed buildings include homes, schools, churches and clinics.
