Kakamega - Kenyans have voiced outrage after pictures emerged of patients at the Kakamega general hospital sleeping on cut-out cardboard boxes due to lack of hospital beds.

Their plight came to light after the county's first lady, Priscilla Oparanya, visited the hospital to distribute food.

Citizen Digital posted images of patients sleeping on cardboard boxes, with other coverage by NTV showing some patients lying on the floor.

Doctors at the facility also indicated that the hospital did not have important life-saving equipment, such as a suction machine, putting patients at risk.

The hospital administration blamed the situation on the government, but County Health Executive Peninah Mukabane rubbished the reports, saying the people sleeping on on the floor were not patients and were out to tarnish the name of the county.

According to Standard, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, a teaching and referral hospital in neighbouring Kisumu County, was no better as patients were being discharged before recovery to pave way for new admissions.
