WATCH: Young Nigerian woman creates 'beautiful' furniture from old tyres

2018-07-12 18:23

A young Nigeria woman's interest in arts and crafts has led her to found Cyrus45 Factory - a fast-growing recycling company that transforms used vehicle tyres into functional furniture and beautiful works of art.

Olabanke Banjo is a former media practitioner, but left her job in May to persuade her new adventure of making well-crafted furniture from old tyres.

Banjo told BBC that she wants to contribute to the "reduction of environmental pollution, which is caused by burning of tyres, loitering of the roads with tyres and the likes".

"I strongly believe in this passion of mine which is upcycling tyres into artsy and ultra-modern furniture," she said.

"I source for my tyres from refuse dumps, incinerators, sometimes the road side, and more often than not I also buy from vulcanisers and also people who want to change their old tyres with new ones."

She said that other women are inspired by her new found business and would like to start similar businesses.

Banjo said she believes that if she does not take care of her environment there would be no one else who would.

According to Africa on the rise, Banjo was born in the 90s and has a bachelor’s degree in French language from Nigeria’s prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, making her bi-lingual.

She has worked for several top Nigerian media houses as a content writer and social media manager.

Banjo said that her company believes that education is important for a sustainable recycling model.

"A paradigm shift from our business as usual attitude i.e if it is not affecting me now then it's not my business. It can only be sustainable when we work together, this is why we look to partner with other organisations that share our values and goals. Every tyre we have up cycled was taken off the street, this is what we call our 'value creation – waste reduction principle'".
