Kampala – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's attendance at the second presidential debate hangs in the balance after he was a no-show at the first one, the Daily Monitor reports.

According to the Chairperson of the Elders Forum, Justice James Ogoola, Museveni's had expressed willingness to attend the debate. However, his staff was yet to confirm his attendance.

Museveni's campaign task force indicated earlier that the incumbent leader was brushing up on last minute details before addressing voters on February 16.

Uganda's first presidential debate was hosted on January 15, where several hopeful candidates came together for a televised discussion to convince Ugandans why they should be voted into power ahead of the presidential elections.

However, Museveni made a last minute cancellation, saying debates were "speech competitions that should be left for high school".

Ugandans go to the polls on February 18.

According to the media, Museveni, who has been in power for more than three decades, is expected to face his stiffest opposition ever.

Three-time loser, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader Kizza Besigye, and the former NRM prime minister, now the leader of the Go Forward party, Amama Mbabazi, are the veteran leader's main rivals.

The other candidates are; Peace and National Unity (PNU) leader Benon Biraaro, the only female candidate; Maureen Kyalya of the African Restoration Party (ARP); as well as Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, who is contesting independently. Baryamureeba claims he is backed by "progressive Ugandans".
