Harare - The youth branch of Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF has set Africa Day (May 25) as the date for the controversial "one million man march", with the event being held in solidarity with President Robert Mugabe.

According to Daily News, Kudzai Chipanga, National Deputy Secretary of the party, claimed that the march would function as a show of support for the long-standing president, who recently confirmed that he would be contesting the 2018 elections, health permitting.

Mugabe was set to be the guest of honour at the event, with Chipanga confirming that all supporters of the nonagenarian had been invited to attend.

"Reasons of the event [are] to reaffirm the youth's support and to confirm our support to his excellency, the first secretary of Zanu PF and the executive president of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde RG Mugabe, as our sole presidential candidate for 2018," Chipanga was quoted as saying.

News Day report indicated that the march was believed to be a ploy by the party to outwit Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The report said anti-Mnangagwa placards were expected to be exhibited throughout the march.

This came as battles to succeed Mugabe, who has been at the helm for more than 35 years, intensified.
