Harare - Two more cholera patients have been admitted to an isolation unit in Zimbabwe's border town of Beitbridge, bringing to 10 the number of recorded cases countrywide, reports said on Monday.

The two latest cases were from Tshidixwa, around 10km from Beitbridge, the state-controlled Herald reported.

"Initial investigations indicate that the victims drank contaminated water, though the rapid result team is still conducting more tests," the paper said.

A total of four people were admitted to the cholera isolation centre in Beitbridge since last week. They were all reported to be in a stable condition.

Additional cases of cholera had been reported in the cane-growing town of Chiredzi, in south-eastern Zimbabwe, and in Mudzi, in the country's north-east.

Memories are still fresh in Zimbabwe of a cholera epidemic that swept through the country in late 2008, killing over 4 000 people.

"The last thing we need is a repetition of that," the Herald said in an editorial comment on Monday, while commending health officials for "quickly moving in to treat, investigate and quarantine the infected as each case required".

Over 40 people have died from a cholera outbreak in the wake of recent floods in neighbouring Mozambique.
