$300m 'lost' diamonds: Zim man sues

2011-09-27 22:26

Harare - A Zimbabwean man is appealing to the country's high court for the return of $300m worth of diamonds that disappeared from the court that wrongly convicted him of illegally possessing the precious stones.

Newman Chiadzwa, 55, was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison over the possession of 43 028 carats of diamonds. The high court quashed the sentence earlier this year, prompting Chiadzwa to approach prosecutors, who used the diamonds as an exhibit during his trial.

According to magistrates, the diamonds, weighing a total of 8.61kg, had been handed over to mines ministry officials.

However, Chiadzwa's defence lawyers said on Tuesday they had had no luck getting them back from the ministry.

Zimbabwe diamonds are not new to controversies. Aside from claims of human rights abuses committed by the army during the mining process, the country's finance minister has said over $100m realised from the auction of diamonds last year were still not accounted for.

If even just one diamond is found I'll eat my laptop. Newman Chiadzwa is about to find out that this is Africa and here crime pays.

You should look for the diamonds in Mugabe's house. Go to the safe in Graca's bedroom.

  • Boetman - 2011-09-27 22:52

They are gone my friend. You will have to find new ones. Zimbabwe is a lawless state in very sense of the word. Most probably the minister of mines have stolen them himself.

Here in the Posh Upper Echelons of Sandton, near the Sandton Square we had a customer recently with a strange order. He showed us his Shopping List : 300 Red Ferrari's; 300 Rolex Watches; 300 Armani suits; 300 christian louboutin shoes; 300 bottles Chivas Regal 20yr whiskey; He had a Zim passport, with the name Lovemore theBaron Sibanda - ... said he had many relatives and they were planning a big party ... specifics such as size, colour, accuracy and fit were not important 'cause the items only had to last one day. wonder if there could be a connection .... ??

The Dear Leader has them. Dont let the mere appearance of due process and legal frameworks mask what is a simple kleptocracy, run by a few individuals.

How do you end up with R2 billion worth of diamonds anyway. This thief must go to jail. I didnt even know they were unknown people like this with this kind of money in Zim.

      Mwafira - 2011-09-28 16:50

The complainant's name is Newman Chiyadzwa. The Chiyadzwa Diamond Fields in Eastern Zimbabwe were his grazing land prior to the Army Invasion of 2008. For several months between 2006 and 2007 this guy had a front end loader and tipper trucks working day and night at the diamond fields. He was also the traditional chief of the Chiyadzwa area and buyer of diamond stones unearthed from the fields by panners and illegal miners. His wife also appeared in court early this year on charges of illegal possession of 4Kg diamonds!

Ask Grace Mugabe. She usually has this type of thing stored in her Safety Deposit box. I'm sure Uncle Bob helped her to get it over to Malaysia for safe keeping.
