44 gays arrested at Zimbabwe party

2012-08-13 12:20

Cape Town - Zimbabwean police arrested 44 members of the Gays and Lesbian Association of Zimbabwe (Galz) attending a party at their offices in Harare, according to a report on Monday.

Galz officials, who have in the past suffered harassment from the police and politicians, had launched a report entitled Galz Rights Violations Report before holding a party at the offices, said Radio VOP.

According to their lawyer, Marufu Mandevere, 44 Galz members were arrested and taken to Harare Central Police station. They were later released without charge.

In a statement, Galz condemned the arrest and detention of its members.

"Galz deplores the arrest of its 44 members who had attended the launch of the Galz Violations Report and a briefing on the second draft of the Zimbabwe constitution on 11 August 2012 at the Galz offices," the statement read.

"Police, some of them visibly drunk, assaulted most of the members using baton sticks, open hands and clenched fists before detaining them without charge. Such use of force is in direct contradiction to the Global Political Agreement.

"Denying Zimbabweans the right to participate in processes that compliment national efforts is an infringement of the right to freedom of assembly and association."

      mike.boylen - 2012-08-13 14:23

@AMOTOSO. Try the 10 commandments. You'll find a mention of keeping the sabbath. No mention of homosexuals though. Strangely, Jesus never mentioned it either. The only (questionable) laws that appear to condemn homosexuality were made by men.

      jody.beggs - 2012-08-13 15:55

@heihachi.mishima.7731 it also says though shall not murder in the 10 commandments. And jesus said "love thy neighbour !" That's what happens when you pick Buy Bull verses to suite the way you feel. So putting " gays to death" is against the Buy Bull i.e. means go to hell. If your stupid enough to "believe" faerie tales.

      zaatheist - 2012-08-13 13:25

heihachi.mishima.7731 When some religious people like you want to use ancient texts to justify acting upon their prejudices, citing the book of Leviticus suits them just fine. On the other hand, when such people want to indulge in practices prohibited by those same ancient texts, ignoring the bible suits them just fine. For example, Leviticus. Particularly the bit about no tattoos. It's amusing stuff. I frequently wonder why, among the many rules and prescriptions therein, Christians don't sacrifice oxen or go to the "priest" to be inspected for "white marks". It's all there, right next to the warning regarding the abomination of homosexuality

      heihachi.mishima.7731 - 2012-08-13 13:37

heihachi.mishima.7731 - hmmm, that constitution you appear to uphold so well.. I could have sworn it makes mention of accepting people of all religious presuasions and gender orientation. I'm also afraid that this isn't a Christian country, despite your views on the numbers, so the Bible has absolutely no authority when it comes to our laws.

      zaatheist - 2012-08-13 14:46

heihachi.mishima.7731 You said so in you original comment which you have now deleted. Coward!

@Skosana - "Sodomy is most commonly legally defined as any contact between the genitals of one person, and the mouth or anus of another." - I'm not sure how anyone would ban Sodomy, by the average definition of the word, as a straight man, I would also protest this primitive law.

      jasonross987 - 2012-08-13 14:33

Why do you associate Democracy with Liberalism? Democracy is a system of government by which the government is \supposed\ to introduce laws that reflect the attitude/opinion of the majority of the country's population. If the majority of the country believe that homosexuality is not abnormal then that government should de-criminalise homosexual practises. And visa versa. Just because a country is \democratic\ doesn't mean it is \liberal\??

      Adele - 2012-08-13 16:30

@Skosana... why aren't you upholding all of God's laws? God is disappointed in you. All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9) A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9) But if this charge is true (that she wasn't a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21) The LORD then gave these further instructions to Moses: 'Tell the people of Israel to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between me and you forever. It helps you to remember that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. Yes, keep the Sabbath day, for it is holy. Anyone who desecrates it must die; anyone who works on that day will be cut off from the community. Work six days only, but the seventh day must be a day of total rest. I repeat: Because the LORD considers it a holy day, anyone who works on the Sabbath must be put to death.' (Exodus 31:12-15)

      mike.boylen - 2012-08-13 15:02

@zaatheist. I think that christians have, throughout history, always needed someone to whom they can feel superior. What's the point of being christian if you can't feel better and holier than others in this life and having to wait for their concept of the afterlife to get their reward. Of course, it's all done in the name of god. They are not condemning others, merely helping them to see "the truth"; at least the truth that suits them.

Damn are these gay people suffering from acceptance syndrome? How do these cops found out they are gays. They should stop being provocative. Neither am I saying we society should dictate to them their sexuality but on the same they shouldn't tryna force us to accept them. Definitely I wouldn't like ma kid witnessing a man kissing a man in a public mall \r\n \r\nMa opinion I'm sorry, but there's no way a person can say that being homosexual is not in some way a matter of choice. Yhu absolutely cannot help being born a certain race, but people are naturally born heterosexual, other factors in their lives have a big influence on what way they go. Life itself can't be possible if everybody chose to be homosexual. There are so many people out there that choose to be gay just because its different. Science can't even prove that homosexuality is definitely in a person's genes.

      mike.boylen - 2012-08-13 14:50

Do you seriously believe that people would choose to be gay when they face the kind of bigotry and hatred being spewed out by some of the people on here? Gay people are not being provocative. They are simply asking for the same rights as everyone else so that they can live their lives in peace. You would have to be a truly evil person to deny that to anyone. I hope all these god botherers remember that they to will have to face their creator one day, but in their smugness they think that they have all the answers and are perfect.

It is sad that after Africa has fought so tediously against European Colonialism, we still have oppression of a people. If God REALLY hates gays, how is that in your place to decide what happens to gays? All you saying that gays should be killed are in a sense 'trying to play God'. Why not let God decide what he wants to happen to the gays 'when we all face him'? How is it fair that I am to be persecuted because of something that i don't have control over and that definitely has a biological cause??? its like the Jews in Nazi Germany. What I am thankful for is that South African government saw that the Human Right that its constitution holds so precious are upheld for ALL people in South Africa!

      zaatheist - 2012-08-13 14:57

Hear, hear. 150+ years ago these religious nutters were ranting on to protect slavery. Up till into the 1990's they ranted on against people with dark skins and used the bible to justify apartheid. They lost those battles. And since religion always attempts to separate the sheep form the rest of society, to make the sheep feel superior, they need bogeymen. Gays are in. When they eventually lose this battle they will come after the non-believers again.

Incidentally, Jesus never said a single word condemning homosexuality. You have created a god in your own image and assigned your prejudice to that god, creating a god that shares your prejudice and who, then, sanctions and defends the unjustified harms that bigots like you would cause to "those who are different." You quite frankly disgust me.

As you're still living in the 19th century that won't bother you too much. And the other pathetic arguement has finally resurfaced: if you disagree with a xtian you must be a satanist. These people who call themselves "civilised", if its agreable to them it must go, are the source of pervasion on earth. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature (Rom 1:26).

I comment for the advice and the peace of the children.Donnot donnot grow or distribute pass on any kind of substances for out patient medical use on to the childrens behavior. It could cause serious little load mouth confusions and alert the interpol or city police authorities.Which can become a parents threat of irresponible explanation.Coming the next school following day for the school board teachers daily writen reports. All I am saying is.Mothers and Fathers.Be careful on another child welfare social service examination spy procedure.WHEN IGNORE YOUR INTELLIGENCE AND TURN YOUR HEAD THE OTHER WAY."BUT WHY"?"BECAUSE THATS HOW YOU GET STUNG BY THE SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION PRINCIPALS AND SCHOOL DISTRICT DIRECTORS".
