Gweru – Lack of evidence has led to the acquittal of a 95-year-old Zimbabwean man who was accused of raping two of his neighbour's children, reports the state-owned Chronicle newspaper.

Kennias Zvidza Mazvihwa had been accused of raping the two girls, aged 4 and 6, while they were helping him with his homestead chores.

According to prosecutor Kelvin Guveya, the suspect raped the two children around June and October last year, and then bought them sweets in order to silence them.

However, the mother of the two children contradicted the prosecutor, saying that the abuse took place around August and October last year.

This then led to the dismissal of the case by Magistrate Morgan Nemadire. The magistrate said that the evidence presented before the court was inconsistent.

"The nature of the report doesn’t satisfy this court for the accused to be placed on his defence. Also the time frame from August to October 2015 and considering the age their mother should have noticed that they were sexually abused," magistrate Nemadire was quoted saying.

In December last year, New Zimbabwe reported that a 53-year-old man had been sentenced to 25 years behind bars after raping his 7-year-old step daughter.

Simon Chiore pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
