Biti: Chinamasa deserves to be in jail

Cape Town – Zimbabwe’s justice minister Patrick Chinamasa is "a justless minister who deserves to be in prison for uttering treasonous statements", Movement for democratic Change Secretary General and Finance Minister Tendai Biti said on Sunday.

This follows Chinamasa's recent utterances in a BBC interview that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai would not win next’s year’s election and that his victory would be unacceptable because of his links to the West.

According to a Zimbabwe Mail report, Biti, who was addressing party supporters in Chitungwiza, said it was wishful thinking for the minister to think that he had power to reject an elected leader.

"Chinamasa is well versed with the constitution and he knows that election results should be respected. For him to incite a coup in Zimbabwe is treasonous which deserves jail time," said Biti.

Biti warned army generals that for them to think that they have the power to refuse saluting an elected leader has adverse implications with the law.

"We are poised for victory and we will not allow the next election to be stolen. The party is ready to defend the vote in the event that Zanu-PF refuses to hand over power in the forthcoming elections," he said.

Tensions are flaring up in Zimbabwe as the country gears for presidential elections which are scheduled for March next year to end the uneasy power-sharing government between President Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai.

Biti's comments are's high time the MDC showed some teeth. Unfortunately, both Chinamasa's and Biti's comments will ramp up tension ahead the next Zim elections - and it could all end in tears!

      sugardick.dupree - 2012-10-22 14:25

Just in the same manner thay ramped up tension when they claimed "The streets of Zimbabwe would be littered with dead bodies and we will witness a genocide that's even worse than Rwanda's ".. Yes, he needs to ramp up tension..

Tears have been flowing constantly since Bob took over Zimbabwe. Ask the Matabele, then the whites, then the rest of Zimbabwe's population. What's new?

      wilbert.mukori.5 - 2012-10-22 18:48

No Zimbabwe needs Minister who will act and not just make empty statements. The threat of another bloody election is real and it will take more than empty words to stop it!

And u biti u deserves to be in jail

      lynette.mufaro - 2012-10-22 13:18

      for what may I ask?

      Jeremy - 2012-10-22 13:20

Lucas...why exactly? Chinamasa unquestionably undermined the constitution by saying an MDC victory wouldn't be recognised. He's the guy who should go to jail - not Biti!

      cosmas.ngwenya - 2012-10-22 13:50

lucas, u deserv 2 b among the dead

      sugardick.dupree - 2012-10-22 14:23

Actually Lucas is right. Biti should be in jail for drafting the ZIDERA bill alongside with Ian Kay.

      Mike.ntsh2009 - 2012-10-22 14:58

SugarDICK Your name is descriptive of what you use to think.

      Mike.ntsh2009 - 2012-10-22 15:09

Lucas & Dick; Why are you not in Mutare and Harare respectively? ...because your master, Bob, has ruined the country!

      wilbert.mukori.5 - 2012-10-22 18:54

Biti deserves to be in jail for failing to ensure the agreed reforms were implemented and then compound the problem by agreeing to a faulty COPAC constitution! Mugabe will be responsible for the beating and murdering of innocent Zimbabweans people like Biti will have to accept that they failed to stop Mugabe when they had the chance to do so!

  • magomarele - 2012-10-22 13:15

Zanu-PF has lost legitimacy to rule Zimbabwe long ago. Arrogant people like Patrick Chinamasa and his brain-dead president, Robert Mugabe should brace themselves for lives in jail or death penalty. MDC would be declared legitimate rulers of Zim, come next elections. The violence and murders that Mugabe used to rig last elections won't work this time. SADC, African Union and United Nations should be thoroughly involved in monitoring the elections. Mugabe is no comrade; he’s an enemy of democracy and African people. His power hunger has turned him into dictator and a murderer. He should face war crimes tribunal.

      sugardick.dupree - 2012-10-22 14:42

Actually, western think tanks and surveys have shown that ZANU wont need to use any violence becoz THE MDC IS LOSING SUPPORT ON A DAILY BASIS! Infact they said that Mugabe currently commands more support than Morgan..

      sugardick.dupree - 2012-10-22 15:02

Magomarele. How is Mugabe an enemy of democracy? Do YOU even know what democracy is?? Some of you people make me sick. Did you expect us to get beat up by MDC folk and not retaliate?? When we retaliated, you called it violence. When they beat us up, you called it self defence.Mugabe will stay either you like it or not..

    Circus comes to mind.

  • afrikeni - 2012-10-22 14:54

Get your popcorns, the same script movie is about to start. WARNING: Not for under 18 as it will contain violence.

  • gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-22 15:00

The whole bunch from the Zanu-PF should have been in jail for the last 15 years.

  • bryan.billy2 - 2012-10-22 15:33

Biti nd Chinamasa ey ar the same?

  • mxeki.maduvula - 2012-10-22 15:34

I think its now high time that Professor Arthur Mutambara joins hands with Simba Makone and run Zimbabwe, with Mutambara as a president and makone as a deputy. Chvangarai is a coward - he can run even a small country like Lesotho or Swaziland! Roy Bennet is right where he is as an agric minister so that he will apply the western farming tactics but not to bring the western people back. Chinamasa must be sacked with immediate effect - he a danger to the zims! Tendai Biti failed the economy of zim hence he must be replaced by the reserve bank governor, Mr Gidion Gono!

  • magomarele - 2012-10-22 15:59

I wish I know war-veterans and ZANU-PF militias who fled starvation from Zim to my country. I would chase them around and replace their rotten-small brains with that of average lizard. It's better than what they have now. Pity I won't be able to catch Mugabe.

  • wilbert.mukori.5 - 2012-10-22 18:45

Minister Biti is well aware that Minister Chinamasa is not the first one to utter these "treasonous" statements; why then has no one been sent to jail? Minister Biti is just posturing and Zimbabwe is in this mess because that is all people like ever do!
