Don't lean against whites, says Mugabe

2012-07-27 09:13

Cape Town - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has castigated Western leaders, saying that they could use Zimbabweans to fight against each other in their endeavour to "exploit" the country, according to a report on Friday.

According to the Herald online, Mugabe urged Zimbabweans to be "cautious of Western leaders who praise them as good leaders while arming them to work against their people".

"There are some among us who are leaning a lot against the whites. If you lean on these people and fail to see that you are being used, then you are a fool," he said in Zimbabwe's Shona language.

Mugabe was speaking a few days after Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai hailed the European Union's decision to suspend most of the sanctions that were imposed on Zimbabwe in 2002.

"Some of us have scars inflicted by the colonial settlers during the period we were fighting against them. But some of us choose to ignore this... They are called good leaders and are equated to Mandela [Nelson Mandela]. And yet they are being used to fight against their own," he said.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard early this week equated Tsvangirai to former South African president Nelson Mandela.

Mugabe also urged Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to return home and benefit from Zimbabwe’s indigenisation and empowerment programme for the development of the country.

He said the country’s struggle had moved to the economy since Zimbabweans took over the land.

"We have the knowledge and we are saying now we can mine our minerals," he said.

Mugabe and Tsvangirai were forced into a coalition government three years ago to avoid a tip into fully-fledged conflict following a bloody presidential run-off election.

      twain.smith.7 - 2012-07-27 09:53

Don't lean against whites. Lean against the chinese, though, that's fine. Mugabe and his counterparts in other african countries are all a bunch of hypocrites. They won't admit their failings which is why it's always the white man who'll get the blame, even decades after independence. With leaders like Mugabe Africa will always be dependent on someone, whether it's western or eastern powers.

      heinrich.spreeth - 2012-07-27 10:08

@peter.ndamase "African countries are massively rich to loan each other funds, we just need a capitalist mind to succeed." WHAT? dude , you sound like one of these models on the podium saying "I want world peace". This is a global economy. Ask Zimbabwe and North Korea how things are going for them with their (the world is evil we must only be on our own) views

Lol, rich coming from an idiot that wears the clothes of a white man, use a white man's vehicle etc. He should be wearing traditional clothing and ride a donkey car (although the wheel was also not from Africa) when he wants to make statements like this.

      Sarah - 2012-07-27 11:09

@thapelo...government have said that companies have to have however many non whites in their company and expect them to earn more even though they don't have a clue what they doing. Plus on top of that they expect free housing, electricity, water, schooling, etc, etc. Us white people have to work our asses off to provide for our families and get them proper education etc. Even having a degree doesn't guarantee us jobs and if we get a job, we get paid peanuts. But still u don't see us marching through town, destroying things just so we can get what we want. We live with it and be greatful for what we have

      Sarah - 2012-07-27 11:46

Thapelo how are we making blacks suffer? We are too busy hiding in our homes scared of being robbed, raped, murdered etc. Country is not run by a white man so we have no power to hurt anyone!

What Mugabe was probably trying to say that he was expecting the west to abandon Zimbabwe, So that he could continue with his old antics on genocide like in '87 This is a murdering SOB that has no interest in a better Zimbabwe just clinging onto POWER, This is the same trend the ANC has here and if you can see the similarities be forewarned every train takes a while to get up to speed. The only way leaders carry on in Africa is by focusing 99% energy staying in power not actually being a government. Idi Amin Dada – Uganda Jean-Bedel Bokassa - CAR Mobutu Sese Seko – [Zaire] Congo Kamuzu Banda – Malawi Laurent Kabila – DR Congo General Sani Abacha – Nigeria Charles Taylor – Liberia Francisco Macías Nguema – Equatorial Guinea General Gnassingbé Eyadéma – Togo Paul Biya – Cameroon Mengistu Haile Mariam – Ethiopia Omar Al-bashir – Sudan Omar Al-bashir – Eritrea Siad Barre – Somalia Hissene Habre - Chad Nothing new same mentality here. The only common denominator is the tribal mentality. All these protagonists have the same rule book divide and conquer. So much for African unity. Greed, Jealousy and Nepotism with a touch of delusion that somehow race can excuse the horrible actions that justify hate, suffering and poverty

Politically ruled by an elitest black class that makes the evils of colonialism pale into insignificance. A class that steals wealth created by white peoples ingenuity, and does not even share it with "their" people when they get it. In fact they normally just break it. he is loosing all his credibility and trust with his nation because he keeps blaming WHITES for his problems, even if he had 100 more years to live i dont think he will stay in power for much longer. you can only tell the same lie for so long .... im actually suprised that he has kept power for this long - but then again he did kill a few thousand people for not wanting to vote for him. its funny - some black south africans love this guy, having no idea what a leader like this can do to a country. 40 years of mugabe rule and it will take 200+ years to bring the country back to its feet. yet some in the ANC want to go the same way, propaganda is a powerful thing ....

And go back to what, being beaten to a pulp and probably killed? The ones who left didn't go because there wasn't work - they left because they fear reprisal for not supporting Mugabe. Besides, I think ZA would suffer a heart attack if the local people actually had to do the work that the Zimbabweans have been doing ;) Honestly, it takes 5 ZA people to do the work of one Zimbabwean (Black or White! ;)), and one sit and watch to make sure that nothing gets stolen!! When Zim gets sorted, we are in for a rude awakening here when they all do go home ;)

spot on, I always wondered why Mandela who was locked up for 27 years by the colonialists who once branded him a terrorist would now want us to believe they love him. Something isnt right here. There will always be questions than answers. Africans arent free from exploitation poltically and economically but yet celebrate freedom days when they are not truly free. This is just a sheer hypocracy perpertuated by the western media.

      pierrefrewd.juice - 2012-07-27 10:57

I think your point is very valid. Just a few thoughts, as far as I am concerned, nobody is politically or economically free from exploitation. I am exploited on a daily basis. But this is not, as you assume some white conspiracy. And if it is, then nobodys invited me. Our politicians like referring to "white capital", and they are the ones exploiting. But they are not "white" as a skin colour. It is big corporations. and our beloved government is also exploiting us. My point is that ultimately, us normal people, will always get the wrong end of the stick. Just be careful who you blame. The persons commenting and venting on this site does not represent any larger race grouping, its merely personal opinions, and does not represent the larger black, white, indian or coloured community.

      Sarah - 2012-07-27 11:28

Mandela is genuinely loved. We liked his idea of living as 1 nation but that all stopped when the next president took over. Black people never want us all to be 1 nation which is very sad and unfortunate. They all still live in the past instead of looking for a bright future. Yes there will be changes where u get more money than others in the jobs not qualified to do but that will push the whites out the businesses leaving the business to fail like everything else in this country. We no longer have proper safe public transport. We have unsafe roads where taxi's have right of way and don't need licenses etc. We can no longer go shopping safely and hygenically in our town centre. Went to the hospital the other night and were told to try others cos Aids patients had filled all the wards, 3 hospitals later we got a place. We paying out our asses for private hospitals but for what reason...they all run the same way now. Country is a joke

hmmm... Most of those people who locked him up are either dead or very very old by now and I doubt any of them claimed to love him. It was 50 years ago, so most of us weren't even born yet.(Not even my parents) So you are comparing apples and oranges. You see this is what pisses me off so much. I am being held responsible for everything every white person has done before me. If your grandfather punched my grandfather in the face, does that give me the right to punch you in yours?

      edward.patterson.923 - 2012-07-29 11:52

@hasani; you, and it seems, the rest of Africa are chasing an illusion, TOTAL ECONOMIC FREEDOM. Check history my friend those with money have always controlled, to a greater or lessor extent, those without money. Sometimes it was obvious such as in England serfs who worked the land and the Lords who owned the land, or in the US where there were tenant farmers who didn't own what they farmed in fact were kept poor by the land owner. Or the mining companies that rented houses to the miner, sold food from a company store. Tennessee Ernie Ford wrote a song about it called 16 Tons. "You load 16 tons what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter don't call cause I can't come, I owe my soul to the company store." It continues today my friend, for most of us. We don't owe the means of production, we have debt with heavy interest rates. Most in the west aren't "economically free." Africa, as a whole needs to realize several important things, and stop putting so much energy into this "economic freedom thing". 1. The colonial powers are gone they control their destiny as much as anyone can, capital always has power. 2. China is no different from the original colonialists in fact may be worse. Just look at their human rights record. 3. You must have a loyalty to your country that is stronger than your loyalty to your tribe. Look to any nation where tribal loyalty is stronger than national loyalty and it never works. continued

      edward.patterson.923 - 2012-07-29 11:57

@hasani continued. 5. Open your eyes to where much of your exploitation is coming from, it's not from foreign powers it's home grown. Check out the net worth of the presidents of various african nations. Check out the net worth of their "loyal cadre of freedom fighters" Even though some of those nations won their freedom 50 years ago. There is a lot of internal exploitation of Africa.

When Mugabe dies, which is as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, he will be a black legend like Garveys, Marley, etc. He is more valuable now to the black cause if he is dead so that people can start separating the principles from the man. A lot of black people out there believe he has the balls to stand up for them regardless of the consequences. A South African leader will soon be forced into a situation where he will be forced to ape Mugabe. Minister Tokyo is already talking like Mugabe a few years back. Hate him all you care, but ordinary black people will not respond in their numbers on this forum coz they mostly don't have the computers. You will be soiling your pants if they take to the street with a sole aim to just find someone to vent their anger against.

Morama and you, ofcourse, live in complete poverty in Lima Peru.

      claire.verdonk - 2012-07-29 01:15

Morama, I hate to break it to you, but ALL politicians all over the world are up to Sh*t! The only difference is who is filling their pockets - China, USA, Europe - it doesn't matter who, the end result is the same, big companies (owned by Black, White, Red or Yellow!) in all of these countries want to keep Africa down so that they can continue to reap the benefits of getting raw materials cheep. The easiest way to ensure Africa never refines its own raw materials to is keep them fighting - its so simple, drop in some weapons and start stirring the race card or take the easier route - buy the leader and get him to keep the hate speak going for you. Because of this, Africans will NEVER get off the ground and into a position where they can say 'Stuff you" to all interfering companies - they have been sold out. Our leaders stand at the podium shouting about how much they hate the West and how the few remaining whites in Africa are to blame for all the problems caused by mismanagement and corruption, yet while they do this, they are buying Castles in Scotland, houses in Paris, German and Italian cars, Savil Row suits and sending their wives shopping in Milan and their children to universities in the UK & USA! And who is paying for all of this - the impoverished people in a country bled dry by its leader who holds out a begging bowl to his neighbors and the West!

  • shadrack.motshwara - 2012-07-27 10:51

Mr Mugabe yo statement clearly shows that you dn't want unity.LETS BUILD NT DESTROY

  • iancharlie.westlewis - 2012-07-27 10:56

What a load of absolute drivel. And some of the comments are even worse. How worrying that, given the evidence, people can still believe the Mugabe of today is anything more than deranged and delusional. To have effectively destroyed a vibrant and sound country, killed tens of thousands, brutally suppressed and forced millions of people into abject poverty, and still have the cheek to blame others and be believed!! That is truly awesome and quite terrifying.

  • John - 2012-07-27 11:00

Do not take these statements personally just because you are caucasian or negroid or mongoloid. We are all being exploited by multinational corporations owned by the INVESTORS who mainly seem to be caucasian. Look at WHICH whites ROBOT GRABITALL MUGAPE is referring to. Also how much of a share does he have in these multinationals who do not have allegiance to ANY nation or COUNTRY. He is royalty. By his own mouth . I am a king. Why should a king be elected?

  • galmzala - 2012-07-27 11:12

WOO Mugabe, why are buying your grocery from woolworths instead of getting it from your back yard garden, why are you staying in a mension while other are staying in mud houses, why are your kids in private schools, why are u shopping in Canada, china, why are you driving expensive car instead of riding a horse. Ndebele people killed by another black people in your country, you are living the life of a king while your country people are begging on the street,Qualified teachers working as waiters in reasturant, riding crocodiles to cross to south africa, why are you speaking English when address your people, english is for whites but you speak it and you are proud, you investeded in countries abroad (Canada, Asia, etc) not in Zimbabwea, and you are telling Zimbabweans not to lean to white people while you are living a western luxury life,GET A LIFE OLD MAN, what have you done for the people of ZIM nothing except to destroy their well being, dignity, insulting they intelligence. WHY African presidents they dont like whites but they take money from african countries and send to Europe, America etc and turn back and said we dont need whites, how foolish do you think black people are?

      claire.verdonk - 2012-07-29 01:46

Glamzala, you say it as it is. Every Zimbabwean I have met here in ZA knows the score and is desperate to return home. I hope that a leader worthy of the people of Zim is elected into power soon and manages to resist the temptations and threats that 'Big Money' will no doubt throw their way to ensure the continued slavery of the Zimbabwean people. The biggest asset Zim has in its fight for emancipation from corrupt leaders such as Mugabe is it's growing number of well educated and enlightened population who seem to have developed socially- beyond racism- and see people for who they are and what they can or cannot do for Zim, no matter what colour they may be. I don't think future leaders will be allowed to rule with an iron grip the way Mugabe has. Hopefully future leaders will look at all the people of Zim as a potential Asset and use them for the best interest of the country - not just themselves!

  • dmazibuko - 2012-07-27 11:20

White people this. Black people that. \r\nAlmost all articles turn into a black and white issue in the comments.

      pyn.appel - 2012-07-27 11:24

which is stupid but EXACTLY what the leaders want because no unity between people on the ground means they stay in power so much longer ... their agendas are not to benifit their people, only themselves!

      charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-07-27 12:00

So true! Its a few ignorant people that change all matters into a racial one

      claire.verdonk - 2012-07-29 01:56

I assume its because of the statement President Mugabe made in the article everyone is commenting on - 'Dont Lean On Whites". People respond to what they read, especially when it is aimed at being divisive. I find that on the ground in ZA (and with the people I know from Zim), black and white people of my generation and younger (40) have put 'race' to once side and are moving towards a future where we judge people by their actions, not the colour of their skin. It is the politicians who continue to try and stir up division and hatred between communities which is so sad. My kids don't even notice colour and thankfully nor do their Black, Indian and Coloured friends and this is the generation that I hope will lose patience with racist leaders and move towards a country where we value people based on their contribution to society, not the colour of their skin.

"Lean on me when you're not strong and I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long till I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on" more propaganda, all i see this man is saying is; "be a slave to your past" the quicker people ignore this old fart the quicker they can move on.

  • hasani.malungana - 2012-07-27 11:47

THIS IS A WHITEMAN'S WORLD and it will remain so until black people learn to do things for themselves. We lag behind on everything, is like when we need a better doctor, accountant, lawyer, engineer and everything professional we lean against a white man. Mugabe is aware and that is why he warns African leaders if we do not heed his warnings we are doomed. We must stop thinking whites are saints. Mugabe has lived his life and now he is regretting why he never gave his people true independence, same here in Muzanzi, we are under the illusion that the ANc has freed us but if you check your mother, father, and all of us blacks we are mere modern slaves and remain mentally arrested by the whites who have given you political power at Codensa in exhange for silence on redistribution of wealth.

sandy.langenstrass - 2012-07-27 21:13 have been so brain washed...and talk absolute rubbish. Nothing could be easier and better for the black man today. You have affirmative action, designed to see that only blacks get the jobs...there is opportunities where ever you look for black youth( my 27 yr old son, although well schooled, neat and honest has battled to fine a job, and still has not got a permanent position)... so don't think blacks suffer and whites have it are very wrong.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-28 10:35

What more do you want to advance yourselves hasani? The only way you will ever "free" yourself is by pulling your finger out of your an*s. Problem with you is you seem to think somebody else but yourself is going to do things for you. You're gonna wait forever dude, its not going to happen!

      jac.theron - 2012-08-11 15:51

You know what the REAL problem is mate? Blacks like Mugabe and you try to make your comments/ideas sound intresting and viable...but that is where it ends. People like Mugabe just wants to stay in power and for that he needs the easiest way in his case is get a common enemy..since we are in africa ..its whites. We are the devil that took your lands etc etc etc etc. Ok let me try something here. This is gonna be the dumbest "argument" that i can think of from my side. Since people like Mugabe and yourself seem to want to get rid of everything white...What are you doing on a computer? Africans didnt invent it so ....hospitals food...KFC... All gone. Now you see how stupid that argument of mine was..though it holds truth, its a childish argument... and we as civilised people should get over this mentality. So please you and Mugabe and all other blacks get over it and MOVE ON PLZ!!!!

  • charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-07-27 11:48

All I don't understand is he chased white people out and now you find zim teachers working in gardens in s.a so what happens if zim people lean on him, is working together worse then living in poverty?

  • Boos - 2012-07-27 11:58

This guy just seem to get younger? Is this news24 photo really Bob ? Unbelievable...

  • kindness.sweet - 2012-07-27 11:59

I fail to understand when people talk without base. White took over Zim from Blacks, just like they did to SA and other african countries, and it was all great. Zim took over from whites, and it was a problem, but it was never a problem when they took over from blacks. who is fooling who here? when black want to take over the land from whites in SA, its called economic downfall, but when they took over our land, it was called economic empowerment. what a shame, i just fail to understand so many white people disliking and making strange comments on this blog. If you dont want changes in SA, you should leave, as you wont cope with the changes that are in the pipeline. Better relocate now. This is Africa, and it belongs to africans, not Europeans. Land belongs to those who makes it, and the wealth of the country shall be shared among-st the people of that country. period. Zim economy is bouncing back, and no one is talking about that, why???

      charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-07-27 12:08

I have just as much of a right to stay here as you you are not more of a south african that me cause your skin is black deal with that so I hav a right to be treated like you, so I can complain when something isn't right just as much as you

      kindness.sweet - 2012-07-27 12:17

I agree, but lets debate on basis of facts and the truth, not this white minority mentality. for the fact that you have access to internet, it means you are empowered in one way or the other. Let us ensure that the majority is also enjoying this benefits. Leaving in harmony is still a wish list in SA. There's too much anger and ignorance from most white people, as some still considers the previous government the best, because they are only looking at their benefits, and not for all. majority of white people hate de clerk, they say he sold them out. can you believe it???what a shame...

      galmzala - 2012-07-27 12:40

Kindness, pliz reason dear yes white took land from black, but when black take land from white what are they doing with that land, nothing except destroying everything and enrich themselves and those who are close to them what about the rest of citizen in that country, If Mugabe is right, why Zimbabweans are all over the world and he is living like a king at their expense why people who vote against him they get killed.I know Zimbabweans here in SA. The trueth is african president are not governing for the people it is for themselves only and their deep pockets

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-28 10:38

You don't understand the comments kindness. What frustrates us whites is that your black rulers seem to abuse you even more than we did. And you just tolerate it. Why on earth are you so content to allow your own to abuse you? I just don't get it!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-28 10:44

@Kindness - education, health care, law and order, pride in our country, etc etc have all gone backwards under ANC rule. I could not give a damn if a black or white person is in charge, just do the job properly! And the hatred has blatantly been cultivated by the current regime, they openly encourage racial hatred - why do you condone this? You can blame us for the past, but its time to realise that the blame for current problems lies at the doors of the self serving elitist regime we currently have in charge. What a shame you can't see this ...

  • Michael - 2012-07-27 12:02

To equate Morgan Tsvangirai to Nelson Mandela is being too inthusiastic of the Australian Prime minister, i wonder is she knows Mandela very well. I think is she must find someone else, maybe F.W De Klerk.

  • Michael - 2012-07-27 12:06

To equate Morgan Tsvangirai to Nelson Mandela is being too enthusiastic by the Ausie Prime minister, i wonder is she knows Nelson Mandela very well, she must find someone else, maybe F.W De Klerk would do. not Madiba.

  • malusi.shumane.7 - 2012-07-27 12:11

That's true, uncle Bob. These morons think they can have final say in defining good leaders. Even here if you say 'Zille is good'z, you get infinite number of thumbs up. Even the editors will give you thumbs up. The moment you say Mbalula is good the opposite is true

      sharon.a.marks.9 - 2012-07-28 10:49

thats because you are to stupid to know good leadership from bad.Question - do you perhaps suffer from downs syndrome

  • bradley.kecskes - 2012-07-27 12:21

I stopped reading at "Zimbabweans to fight against each other in their endeavour to "exploit" the country" hypocrite much Mugabe....?

  • Sima1989 - 2012-07-27 12:28

black people are always gd at blamin other ppl whn al goes wrong! Forgettn tht we wr the ones who allowd them to invade our space!

      pisciotta - 2012-07-28 01:30

Sima: If others didn't "invade" you would not have the ability to even type your comment on News24. If you want to go back to the bush - then do so - Click yourself an Internet.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-28 10:49

To be fair to Sima, if Africa had been allowed to develop at its own pace, it probably would have been a better continent today. But history is history, all over the world nations have dominated other nations, and all seem to have survived. Why can't Africa do the same. I think its a lack of will, so its easier to just point to history every time there is a failure. Unless Africa can stop the blame game excuses, it will forver be a dark continent. To achieve this Africa somehow needs to find some leaders who are not just self serving!
