Gays in Zim excluded from HIV treatment - report

2013-09-13 14:01

Cape Town - A Zimbabwean gay rights association claims that its members are being discriminated against when accessing treatment for HIV and Aids, according to a newzimbabwe.com report.

Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ) programmes manager Samuel Matsauke said the problem was prevalent in the country's remote, rural areas.

Matsauke said gays experienced discrimination on a daily basis, but did not report it as they knew they would never get assistance.

A ministry of health official, however, said it was not government policy to discriminate against patients.

President Robert Mugabe has openly castigated homosexuality, describing same-sex marriage as a "filthy, filthy, filthy disease".

The veteran leader also recently threatened to jail anyone involved in homosexual acts.

Seriously...?? What a truly backward country!

      Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-13 14:15

      have u been to Zim?

      James Mabote - 2013-09-13 14:42

This doesn't make sense. Is it a requirement in Zimbabwe that patients should disclose their sexual-orientation before receiving treatment? This gay group is just looking for attention.

      Nditsheni Singo - 2013-09-13 20:15

I refuse. It is only sanctions because Mugabe wants not to be dictated upon. The country is just fine with discipline. They respect their leaders unlike us who keep critisizing our leadership. It is us who critisize Mugabe and not the Zimbabweans. They are Loyal to Mugabe. Thats why they vote for him forever. They are afraid if someone takes over, buildings could be burned by those who are lazy and good at blaming the government. They fear strikes.

      BeObamaz - 2013-09-14 20:40

Very strong media coverage neh!,where and since when are people asked to reveal their sexuality when the go for HIV testing? This is utter nonsense,it giving people a wrong image of Zimbabwe.

      Ian Forsyth - 2013-09-15 03:32

Didnt used to be - When it was Rhodesia it was an African Leader State !

      Reason - 2013-09-15 21:01

I like how these people are so blind that they continue to defend Zimbabwe and Mugabe stating that they should not be subjected to outside influence, meanwhile Mugabe seems content with making his people suffer and slowly slip into poverty. After all zimbabwe is fully dependant on the generosity of the nations such as the US and the others from Europe because they are the ones keeping it a float. zimbabwe doesnt even have its own currency and is still primitive in nature they cant be helped I say we just let them destroy themselves no more help from us and they will see how worthless they really are

  • Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-13 14:14

these groups are now after relevance and funding period. Half of the members are not even homosexuals....#whos fooling who?!

      LizK - 2013-09-13 14:19

It is entirely possible for heterosexuals to fight for the equality for homosexuals.

      Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-13 14:30

very true, but if we look for the real reason thats when we will realise "ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY" LizK.....at whose expense? the whole country?

      LizK - 2013-09-13 14:41

Well if they are looking for money to fund their campaigns and programmes then I don't see the problem. It's not like they are getting money from the government, so I don't see how it can be at the expense of the whole country.

      Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-13 15:04

One, the money is not to fund their campaigns, they are enriching themselves...ths I KNOW. Two when i say at "at the expense of the whole country" i refer to its image....some people are very myopic, they judge according to what they hear in the media. One can suddenly become an analyst by just reading that headline, thus the country's image is compromised.

      DamnTheMan - 2013-09-13 17:43

@Kelvin. references please or you are just spreading hate speech!

      Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-13 22:03

DamnTheMan...I dnt knw were u want referrence exactly, and I dnt think I am spreading hate speech...I myt just be ignorant after all.

  • Ntondo Marethau - 2013-09-13 14:25

It is a good thing because they can spread more aids, meaning soon the population will decline until there's nobody left and the world would not have to worry about Mugabe and his cronies anymore

      Helen Kasfikis - 2013-09-13 15:18

Sickening comment. Straight people spread Aids more than homosexual people in Sub Saharan Africa. Pray that you are not denied medical treatment oneday based on something genetic such as your skin colour.

      DamnTheMan - 2013-09-13 17:44

So is homophobia better than racism?

      NicBrits - 2013-09-13 21:31

DamnTheMan what is homophobia? Homo = human and Phobia = great fear. What nonsense.

      Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-14 08:06

Helen do u honestly believe these people are asked about their sexual preference befoore treatment? i dont see how there are denied treatment based ontheir preference.

      DamnTheMan - 2013-09-14 20:53

      Hating gay = Homophobia ?

  • Lerato Rato - 2013-09-13 14:25

      Maryna Ellis - 2013-09-13 14:28

Well, I don't support vegetarians but I won't deny them their human rights!

      Helen Kasfikis - 2013-09-13 15:20

Personally I don't like you very much but that doesn't mean I would want you to be denied life saving treatment.

      Phoenixx - 2013-09-13 15:29

      SkyeBerry - 2013-09-15 09:34

Please read a Bible before referencing it... as an atheist it seems I know they Bible even slightly better than you do. And you believe it. Do you truly believe everything, even before reading it properly yourself? Thinking is a lonely game in this world.

  • Thembelani Mthombeni - 2013-09-13 15:01

they say homosexuality is prevalent n tolerated in zim jails yet nobody bothers to find out wat happens to these people after release.

  • Mundamurefu Tatora - 2013-09-13 15:38

HIV treatment is based on the condition, not how you have been sleeping around. HIV positive people are being treated in Zim. The virus is the same whether homosexually, heterosexually, medically or accidentally acquired. These people with a filthy filthy filthy desease must shut up as we treat them. They have no space in Zim and are running on borrowed time.

  • proudlysa - 2013-09-13 17:14

Uncle Bob, kick open those closet doors and come out. Only "closet gays" fight so vigorously against homosexuality. I suspect it goes for some people on this site as well. Anyone divorced? Work on a Sunday? Eat pork? Cut your hair? Well, then the bible says you are wrong too!!

      Mundamurefu Tatora - 2013-09-13 17:23

I could be wrong but i have not done a dispicable act, could be wrong but dont carry a vedict of death by stoning. Your gay recruitment drive does not have merit, its you and your few ass tickling partners. Leave Mugabe alone, he is open on this, its a filthy filthy filthy deseases.

  • Paul Mangwiro - 2013-09-13 20:02

When some people call Africa The Dark Continent it is permissible in so far as our misconception of DEMOCRACY (which I simply define as enjoying your rights without infringing on those of the next person) is concerned. We come with all sorts of religious and unreligious reasons to justify why fellow human beings should be denied the right to freely choose and practize their their individual choice of sexual orientation, when we are freely exercising ours with a smug sense of righteousness. Are they calling you to abandon the heterosexual ship and be homosexual by being "heterophobic" or inventing all forms of criminalisation of heterosexualism? So why criminalise or hate some people who are simply crying for a right to be allowed to be themselves? I'm heterosexual, but I see no reason at all to deny homosexual rights. If it isn't right, and if at all there is any better virtue in heterosexualism, then all the dogmatic religious freaks instead of hurling homophobic and sanctimonious criticism should be glad for a God sent opportunity to outshine those they allege to be in the dark: not by clamoring for oppressive legislation, but by living lives worth emulating. South Africa remains and for a long time shall remain the only TRUE shining beacon of democracy where the rest of the continent is groping in a great horror of darkness!

      Nditsheni Singo - 2013-09-13 20:39

Paul, I differ with you. That which you say is shining democracy must not offend the natural law. If it does, then it is not democracy. Even in South Africa people are not agreeing, it is those who thought they are doing justice and tried to legalize it. Why attracted by another man. I can bet you, those who fought to legalize it cannot practice it. You are misled dont you see it. I repeat you need a woman to enjoy sex as a man and vise versa. two males can't do it and I bet you. Otherwise they will be doing it wrongly because there is only one route for such. Like wise are two ladies.

      Tatora Ivhu - 2013-09-16 16:20

Gay marriages are not allowed. Marriage in Zimbabwe is between a man and a woman. That's the LAW. Gay people are not persecuted or hunted down or arrested on sight as you would want people to believe. These guys are free to do whatever they want in the privacy of their homes. Why do they feel there is a need for it to be sanctioned by the state? I can't convert to Islam and demand the right to eat pork! If you want to engage in same sex go ahead but why go around with placards displaying to the whole world. Do you see heterosexuals going on heterosexual pride marches?

  • Nditsheni Singo - 2013-09-13 20:10

This is what I call leadership. If animals, birds and even insects knows how to distinguish between male and female, what can we say about humankind. That out to reason. I agree with Mugabe, thats FILTHY, FILTHY, FILThY. South Africa! people must be led and not that everything they say is right. Look at the discipline of our youth. Parents are denied the right to raise their own children. Remember the SPARE THE ROD saying. All adults here were taught life by parents through the rod. We will still see many things when the generation of the mamasbabys take over the RSA. Watch and see. I wish MUGABE long life for discipline and his role as the leader. No compromise VIVA ROB VIVA!

      Lerumo Luza Tonise - 2013-09-13 22:25

Hope you stay out RSA the epitome of civilized africa. When Zim collapses again...take your asylum elsewhere.

      Zanoxolo Duncan Lholhoza Mbekela - 2013-09-14 13:24

This is what i call a great leadership man Gay is bad like it or not i mean this thng startd frm the west now here in Africa. It must be banned maarn , i salute Robert Mugabe

Homosexuality is like a disease that spread, the sooner it is cured the better, this thing started in european states, now its in Africa, only venereal diseases spread like that.

      Helen Kasfikis - 2013-09-13 22:43

LOL it was here a loooooong time before the white man arrived baba.

      Musawashe Moyo - 2013-09-13 23:13

There is no reference of homosexuality in the entire African history until the time the european arrived

      Kelvin Mazanza - 2013-09-14 08:22

The existence or non-existence of homosexuality in Africa is not the point here Helen. should we condone the behavior because it has been in existence for a long time, why was it not common to meet a gay 30-40yrs ago?

      LizK - 2013-09-14 17:33

Kelvin, you need to brush up on your history. It is a well-documented fact that homosexuality was rife amongst the ancient Greeks and Romans.
