Hunger worsening in Zimbabwe - UN

2012-08-29 07:55

Harare - The United Nations food agency says hunger is worsening in Zimbabwe after erratic rains, shortages of seeds and fertilizer and "poor agricultural practices" in the troubled economy led to a reduction in fields planted with the main staple foods.

The World Food Programme said cereal harvests in the current season were down by an estimated one third compared to last year.

About 1.1 million rural people will need food aid up to December, rising to 1.6 million in the traditionally "lean months" to March, it said.

The agency's latest bulletin on Tuesday said $119m is needed for upcoming food assistance but so far only $32m has been pledged by financial institutions and donors for food imports.

WFP said food shortfalls are becoming especially critical in arid southern Zimbabwe.

This is hardly surprising considering the destructive policies of Mugabe and his cronies.

      daan.vandenberg.773 - 2012-08-29 08:04

Are you surprised that they will now look towards the "hated Colonialists" for help?

      jonathancfarrell - 2012-08-29 08:37

Do not understand the logic! They created this mess, so give them aid? How will they learn? As harsh as that sounds unfortunately the only way some of these states will come out of their mess is if they learn from their mistakes

      jack.russel.14268769 - 2012-08-29 09:38

Starve. The lot of you. You thought that killing the farmers and taking the land was funny. Starve

      Rudolf - 2012-08-29 09:50

I wish some-one would sabotage / blow-up / destroy the UN food shipments going into zim... The hated colonialists gets 'thrown out', but they then return with the proverbial food bowl, FOR WHAT!!?!?!?? When there is a shortage of bread, let them Feast on the ideals & visions of those in power.

      Rob.Trianglem - 2012-08-29 12:03

Dont worry they are all on their way here to commit crime for food.

      rick.kabose - 2012-08-29 12:43

Now i'm happy the US is going to have a lower crop yield this year due too a drought there.Less food aid for zimbobwe ...he he he,you reap what you sow.

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-08-29 13:13

And the ANC love and revere Mugabe, INSANITY...

      sticky.toffee - 2012-08-29 14:26

Its so sad that the ordinary man on the street is the one that suffers the most. While the policy makers (Uncle Bob and co.) continue to enjoy their lavish lifestyles.

      john.pope.75491 - 2012-08-29 15:09

Don’t worry about uncle Bob and Zimbabwe.... WE MAY BE NEXT IF THE STUPID GOVERNMEND DONT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CRIME, ANCYL,AND FARM MURDERS...!!! They won’t be able to blame apartheid or Mrs Zilla for that,...!!

  • Lyndatjie - 2012-08-29 08:05

Hey look Malema - your hero and his concepts for land grabbing and nationalisation is proving to the rest of the world that it works. Good for you for following such a brilliant man. Go and live with him in his country so that you can learn some more.

  • marc.rule - 2012-08-29 08:11

While the people suffer Mugabe gets fat on the suffering of the people

      sticky.toffee - 2012-08-29 14:29

yes Marc it is so sad to see the suffering. I pray for our fellow Africans across the border (white and black)

  • klaas.waarzegger.7 - 2012-08-29 08:16

Dear United Nations. Thank you for sharing this usefull information with us. You ,however, forgot to mention land grabbing and subsistance farming practices as the main reasons for this predicament.

      Rudolf - 2012-08-29 09:51

Bravo Klaas, if only they wanted to listen to the voice of reason...

  • derek.smith.12177276 - 2012-08-29 08:34

Hey uncle Bob!!!! Dont say I didnt tell you so when you kicked out the white farmers...!!

  • derek.smith.12177276 - 2012-08-29 08:36

Black leaders in Africa without eception have an uncanny ability to cut off their noses to spite their faces and afterwards proclaim it to be triumph for the medical fraternity...

I hope millions die. Just to prove a point.

      Rudolf - 2012-08-29 09:52

      I'm on a "100 Million"......

  • jaclynwds - 2012-08-29 08:45

How can we help? I'd be willing to put a food package together if I knew it would get to someone who needs it.

      Johannes - 2012-08-29 09:28

And I would build space ships and time machines if only the government would assist me with some start up capital.

      harald.voney - 2012-08-29 09:53

then they don't learn a thing...

      Rudolf - 2012-08-29 09:56

jaclyn, I'd be willing to come over to your place and clap you upside your thick head, if only I new it would do some good.. THEY threw out the hated white man, THEY are now starving. The farmers who were thrown out (the ones not murdered) didn't take their equipment with, it was all left there... To be used to continue the planting cycle and to feed themselves, but NO... LET THEM STARVE......

  • martin.willemse.10 - 2012-08-29 09:00

i have no sympathy...let them starve....they got what they voted for.

  • gary.guy.507 - 2012-08-29 09:00

    Tell someone who cares!!

  • anakin.skyvader - 2012-08-29 09:01

But MUGABE is STILL there spewing racial hatred at everyone. It is now NOT the evil white colonial man's fault if Mugabe chases expertise away with violent farm grabs just so his cronies can say "we have the land now" (to sit on and stare at the sun smoking weed). Now that the grasshoppers have chased the hardworking ants away there's no food...the same old African story.

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-08-29 09:11

  • bomb.technician.5 - 2012-08-29 09:12

Zimbabwe was once a shining jewel in Africa (holiday resorts, lodges, game farms, hunting, mega tobacco industry, food producer). Sad to see how it has fallen apart. Just because a race or nation is too proud to accept the help and input from people that know what they are doing. Mugabe spits at the "Western Colonialists" for making his country such a powerhouse, and then breaks it to the ground with his african mentality, and by no doubt will he be crying for help soon to feed his people....which I doubt, as he doesn't care about them.

  • tin.can.501598 - 2012-08-29 09:13

U.S.A once had Johnny Cash, Steve Jobs and Bob Hope. Now in Zimbabwe Mugabe has created starving millions with no cash, no jobs and no hope.

  • klaas.waarzegger.7 - 2012-08-29 09:29

Ja Janine. Zim is now Bob's own country.

  • klaas.waarzegger.7 - 2012-08-29 09:34

The Cape is now once again called the Cape of Good Hope(Thanx to Zille and de Lille) and Bob's county called Zim of no Hope

  • harald.voney - 2012-08-29 09:56

Historically, revolutions happen when ppl are starving... maybe now they will do away with Bob, and all his friends!! But, this is Africa, and they would happily starve for their beloved leader... Don't feed them... otherwise this madness will never end!

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-08-29 10:06

Well if they wanna follow a leader like Mugabe and chase white farmers out the country and destroy the farms then they must suffer. Im sorry but they bought it onto themselves. When Mugabe eventually doe pass away then they gonna cry for the west to help them. If I was the western countries I'd say sort your own problem out. Because they will just rely on food aid and will not do anything to help themselves.

      rick.kabose - 2012-08-29 16:22

  • willienelson02 - 2012-08-29 11:27

They made their bed, now let them sleep in it! Rhodesia was once a prosperous country, and a pleasure to visit. We had to go and fight a useless war, costing South Africa millions, then they just handed it all over to Mugface, who thought it a good idea to kill the white farmers, bulldoze their homesteads, and steal whatever they could. Some friends were forced to leave with a maximum of R8.00, their clothes on their backs, and one car. So I have no sympathy for the bastards at all. We should view them as toxic waste, and go and dump them somewhere, in sealed barrels. Strangely, most South Africans don't seem to realize that the same thing is happening here. A complacent cat is a dead cat!

tell Mugabe to share his billions that he stole from them

  • bontle.kgosi.5 - 2012-08-29 11:52

Zimbabweans must stop being docile and revolt against Mugabe. How many of them must be killed by wild animals whilst crossing the Kruger Nation Park to come to SA before they wake up? This is too much now.

  • LanfearM - 2012-08-29 12:21

No surprise that Zim is starving. The country that used to be the "breadbasket of Africa" is now starving. But hey! at least they have a piece of land neh! At least they can starve on their own barren and lifeless farm.

  • charles.everett.754 - 2012-08-29 12:52

When Mugabe goes the country will find its feet again - until those idiots get rid of him - they will reap what that idiot sows! He knows only of himself - a Lunatic - and the world ignores him - or it! Sad Sad Sad!

  • richard.zanner - 2012-08-29 14:33

How can they say hunger is increasing. Mugabe is getting fatter by the day. Oh yes I forgot land grabbing is not the same as land cultivating.
