Mixed reports on Mugabe's health

2012-04-10 08:01

Cape Town – Contrary to reports that Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is "fighting for his life", in a Singapore hospital, a member of his Zanu-PF party has said that "he is enjoying an Easter break with his family in Asia", a report said on Monday.

According to The Zimbabwe Mail, a member of Zanu-PF denied that Mugabe had a health emergency, suggesting instead that he was set to fly back into the country sometime on Wednesday.

"The President is on his Easter holidays, like everyone else. He returns to his post this week, at the same time as those who are asking about his whereabouts from their holiday hideouts,” he was quoted as saying.

But reports maintain that the ailing leader underwent intensive treatment in Singapore and was battling for his life.

The embattled 88 year old left on what was described as a "private visit" to Singapore on 31 March.

His aides said Mugabe would use the trip to oversee arrangements for his daughter, Bona, to begin post-graduate study, after she received her accounting degree from a Hong Kong university last year.

Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980, visited Singapore eight times last year.

His spokesperson described the trips as necessitated by cataract surgery, or simply private visits, amid repeated media reports that he was suffering from cancer.

His health has been the subject of much speculation, especially since WikiLeaks last year released a 2008 US diplomatic cable saying central bank chief Gideon Gono had told then-US ambassador James McGee that Mugabe had prostate cancer and had been advised by doctors he had less than five years to live.

Mugabe's health has been cited as one reason that a faction of his Zanu-PF party has pushed to rush new elections.

But the Zanu-PF leader, who has already been named as his party's candidate for the next elections, has shot down rumours that he is sick.

      Psalm - 2012-04-11 14:02

@ Cheslin I guess "good news" would be relative... Mugabe's potential successor is someone more brutal, more ruthless, more uncompromising than Mugabe. He has zero issue with drenching the place the blood. He is the man said to be behind every mass blood spill in Zim, carried out for ZAnu PF. He is also said to be the architect of Zim's brutal state security. Emmerson Mnangagwa a.k.a. the "Butcher of Matebeleland". Compared to Mnangagwa, Mugabe seems like a reasonable diplomat, wonderfully compromising and afraid of the sight of blood. Mnangagwa's brutal and murderous reputation precedes him. I would also expect that any Zanu PF leader succeeding Mugabe would be under intense scrutiny and pressure from the top generals to prove himself "worthy" of the position. It is possible that the next leader might even seek to outdo Mugabe. If you imagine that the top generals can be dismissed - think again. If speculation is true, then Mugabe remains in power because they will NOT let him step aside.

Agedah.... that is quite right , and very insightful, we need forward thinkers that can call a spade a spade.... Aghedah for PRESIDENT , SA and ZIM !!

  • Bibi - 2012-04-10 08:58

What is he doing in a Singapore hospital anyway. does Zim not have any doctors and hospitals - thought all was honky dory in Zim. Removing cataracts is very basic. Same in Kenya - all the ministers run to the US (nogal!) for any kind of treatment, while the general population has to be satisfied with 10th grade medical care.

HAVE YOU EVER COME FACE TO FACE WITH KASUKUWERE OR ME? You aint seen anything yet! Mugabe is a saint compared to some of us and I am 26 years old

  • ZimStylEE - 2012-04-10 09:28

@ Agedah Alex First and foremost I am not your brother, and secondly shut the hell up.....we are moving ahead with our Empowerment and Indigenisation Programmes. Our people deserve lasting prosperity not your Rhodesian model which meant abject poverty for blacks and excess for the whites. Do not give your nonsense here. Ownership is wealth, jobs is is fluid, ownership of land lasts.,... that is why we have all the Rhodies in full force here.....they have selective application of the human rights and civil liberties card......which is often a mask for preserving white privileges...... deceptive and devious individuals.....we aint never buying your nonsnense

      jacqueseng - 2012-04-10 11:24

You not going to be buying anything else either, because the people in your country cannot make money they cant even farm on land that got stolen from some and given to others..... Mugabe got Zim there , it did not come from there..... his great work turned your country into the poorest country in the world...... Ownership of land does not last especially in ZIM.....

  • ZimStylEE - 2012-04-10 09:47

@criticallyhonest well your wish will not come true anytime soon lol and if it does there is more where this one came from......the Zimbabweans you have in SA are our weak breed and they could not cut it....survival of the fittest in times of crisis, manufactured crisis, by your kith and kin to reverse the gains of our Liberation war....

  • Gemma-Leigh - 2012-04-10 10:37

Initially I was going to comment on how sad this article made me...I was so excited to hear the tyrant might finally meet his maker and be held accountable for his actions. However I couldn't help but notice ZimStylEE has a lot to say. He speaks with an educated grasp of the English language, and whilst we are all entitled to our own opinions, his comments reflect simply his primitive nature. He says he's 26....well that says it all...I wouldn't listen to him. He's simply stirring the waters in the hope he might find some shred of excitement in his otherwise mundane life. As for owning a computer...not sure what that's supposed to mean as thieves own computers too.

      ZimStylEE - 2012-04-10 10:56

Oxford graduate to be precise love....its not just a grasp of the English language I have, I am only using English for the benefit of others... Primitive nature does not apply to me....I am not an architect of slavery, apartheid, segregation, colonialism, Imperialism count me out when it comes to 'primitive nature'......I know that is what you referred my answers to as...... My life is not mundane in any way, I am highly active, I have a good circle of friends and I believe in my country, I read to learn not to enjoy, I critically analyse rather than just browse the way you are not being coerced into listening to me....its a public forum and definitely there will divergent views otherwise it will be boring, not everyone will buy your 'democracy and human rightss' overused crap.....Oh by the way a computer really does not excite me, its a means to communicate and thats about it

      jacqueseng - 2012-04-10 11:41

And i see you are all about communicating.... ZimStyIEE..... Are you aware that people work on Computers as well..... thats what they are there for, to create...... You are a new breed , you not acting like it are you...? By that I mean you have not considered all the facts and taken an evolved approach, until then , go comment on forum where people care what you have to say , because we dont

      Gemma-Leigh - 2012-04-10 13:42

      Kagiso - 2012-04-10 16:41

explain why numerous of your countrymen are in my country, most of them illegally? mugarbage is a DICTATOR= no freedom of speech, murdered millions of his own people for selfish objectives, responsible for the matebele massacre, embezzled billions of country's financial resources and tax payers money to finance his own selfish projects, such as the congolese war and building palaces in parts of asia and in zim, people are forced to go to his political rallies, he's trying to establish a 'cult of personality,' initiated the land distribution programme, which was both racist and a failure as he gave the land to black people who had no agricultural expertise and experience and the black people who worked there lost their jobs. as a result the country experience a large drop in terms of food production.................................would you like some more damning evidence, or is this infomation too hard for your small mugarbage brainwashed mind to handle?

Amadihila, I notice younot one for nuances ? If you did you would not ask a foolish question like that..... Secondly , if you are a Zimbabwean in South Africa, take your stuff, and your opinions and hot foot it to Messina right now.... we dont want you here...... If you are in Zimbabwe, dont come here.... I benefit from that as follows : Such a narrow minded, primitive, ignorant, selfish, individual who pillaged and destroyed one the most beautiful countries on the continent should get everything that he deserves, rightly so being HIV and cancer..... Hell if could send him Ebola in an envelope I would. To get back to my benefit, without him the world will be a better place.

I'm not surprised the majority (whites, boers) are wishing President Mugabe evil. This proves that \Killing and demonism\ is in their blood. They've killed black people in South Africa before whilst asking for freedom in their own land. Now they are wishing all evil for President Mugabe, I can tell it is not because you are all concerned about the current situation for the people in Zimbabwe, it's all about your \white farmers\ whom you believe were ill-treated there.\r\n\r\nLet me remind you. After all that you've done to our elders (ancestors) in this land of ours, we still live with you in this so called Rainbow Nation umbrella and we never ill-treat you. Can't you (whites, Afrikaners) just be humane once in a while..!? Whether Mugabe should still live for next 100yrs or not, is not for you to decide... Get well \Honarable\ President Mugabe. Just like you honered Terreblanche on his last day...

Thabo, why is it my fault that your ancestors were opressed, I dont approve of that either. What I dont undestand is that you use the word honarbale.... WHY ? This man completely destroyed the economy, sold all your mineral rights to the chinese and made millions of people in ZIM suffer , endlessly..... What is so honourable about that..... ? We must be humane to him ? C'mon !!!
