Mugabe asked to be UN 'leader for tourism'

2012-05-30 08:59

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, accused of ethnic cleansing and bankrupting his country, was on Tuesday appointed by the United Nations to become the new international envoy for tourism.

The  UK Guardian reported on Wednesday that despite the fact that Mugabe, 88, was under a travel ban, he had been honoured as a "leader for tourism" by the UN's World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), along with his political ally, Zambian president Michael Sata, 75.

The pair signed an agreement with UNWTO secretary general Taleb Rifai at their shared border at Victoria Falls on Tuesday.

With a line-up that includes Drew Barrymore, David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, and Ricky Martin, the UN's choice of ambassadors has been known to cause raised eyebrows or the odd smirk.

According to the report, UNWTO said it had not appointed Mugabe to any formal position but acknowledged he would receive an open letter like other heads of state who have joined its leaders for tourism campaign.

The development has stunned human rights campaigners and political opponents, who regard Mugabe as a tyrant.

      farmfreund - 2012-05-30 09:38

      Fussed - 2012-05-30 10:33

Make Hitler priminister of Isral, What a joke

      Ashley - 2012-05-30 10:42

All he needs to do now, is invite Angelina Jolie to give birth in his country....sure tourism will rock.

      justindeklerk - 2012-05-30 10:52

I want some of whatever they are smoking! It clearly brings on a new level of hallucinogenic!

      Squeegee - 2012-05-30 11:26

This has got to get the prize for the stupidest announcement of all time.

      Mandy - 2012-05-30 12:01

W-T-F- !!!!! A laugh a minute - what with the Zuma painting, and a crying attorney, Juli-arse and the rest of the magnificently corrupt - and now this!! Mugabe ?????. That's like putting Hitlers name forward for the Nobel Peace Prize !!

      Oom - 2012-05-30 12:25

There is just NO way that this can be true...they must be taking the p!$$.....pass me a banana...

      Konstabel - 2012-05-30 12:38

I thought exactly the same ... this is just ridiculous. Mugabe and his regime have killed more people in Zim than have been killed in the Syrian uprising. The only thing he should be appointed to is the gallows.

  • CharlesDumbwin - 2012-05-30 09:07

    Uhmmmm ... Is this a joke ???

      eil33nn - 2012-05-30 10:53

They must have lost their minds!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-05-30 13:14

The entire UN organisation is a joke...

  • Sattva - 2012-05-30 09:09

This must be a joke !!! ha ha ha - very funny

  • Greg - 2012-05-30 09:15

The UN itself is a global joke. Smoke and mirrors and a waste of time, money and energy.

      Aaron - 2012-05-30 10:30

When you consider that the UN appoints IPCC contributors in much the same way, the (now discredited) global warming hysteria makes perfect sense.

  • Trevor - 2012-05-30 09:23

I'm sure this is a joke people. The UN wouldn't drag their name through the mud like this....or would they?

      revaro.winkler - 2012-05-30 10:17

      Aaron - 2012-05-30 10:30

Well they dragged the world, and their name, through the global warming fiasco.

  • Philip - 2012-05-30 09:23

The United Nations, that is yet to Unite a Nation....fuc#$en pathetic.

  • Philip - 2012-05-30 09:25

Looks to me as if the dictators have got their tenticals into the United Nations. God help us. The world is being overtaken by madness! The UN have no guts!

hulle het seker net 'n naguiltjie nodig?

  • Johnathan - 2012-05-30 09:37

I scheme Mugabe is on his way out but is scared of being prosecuted for crimes against humanity, so he went to the UN and made a exit strategy and this is like a show of good faith from the UN and in any case 'leader of tourism' ??? luckily no farms involved there

  • Blip - 2012-05-30 09:44

Next thing Mugabe will be the world leader for swimming and ping-pong.

  • Warwick - 2012-05-30 09:55

The UN has reached its sell by date; it's run by third world leaders living the highlife from western country donations and carries no more weight. The cold war was won by the west, the UN has no place anymore, and it serves no real purpose anymore. It's in League with the 'league of Nations'. And you expect us to take it seriously again with Uncle mad dog Bob pulling strings?

  • Hermann - 2012-05-30 09:55

Hey, hold it the date is 30 May!!!

      Lordwick - 2012-05-30 13:14

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-05-30 10:05

Hate him or love him this man is a political survivor! Zim economy was in the doldrums but its picking up now with a growth rate of 7% per annum, in as much as people hate him he has defied all odds. Besides his dark side I salute him for empowering his people, now that they own the land I wish them the best in the future. One thing for sure the land issue is a done deal in Zimbabwe and whats remaining is development, with diamonds all over the show it’s a matter of time before Zimbabwe picks up

      Patrick - 2012-05-30 10:10

Great, so may we take it that you will be emigrating there?

      arthur.hugh - 2012-05-30 10:19

Hey moron! There's a banana somewhere in a tree in Zim with your name on it, why don't you go fetch it.

      peter.tony.14 - 2012-05-30 10:32

7% from such a low base - any moron could achieve that...

      Deon Du Plessis - 2012-05-30 10:37

Are you being serious?????? 7% p/a??? if your inflation is at a zillion present, is hardly "defying all odds", its not even covering the inflation. From delivering 70% of the world's tobacco, to just about squat at the mo, how is that a success? "The land issue is a done deal", yeah, absolutely that's why Zim is such an economic power house at the mo. They took back 1000's of producing farm, and fed them to the dogs. It is quite clear you have NO idea of what is/has happened over ther

      Felix - 2012-05-30 10:38

Same thing Hitler did, except Hitler actually got his country booming. Look how that turned out.

      lerato.kay.3 - 2012-05-30 11:21

@Deon Du Plessis I suggest you do a little bit of research before you blubber, for your own info Zim inflation rate, Interest rate is below that of South Africa currently and has been like that for almost 2 years. No prize for guessing why so, because they have dollarized their economy i.e. they have adopted the US$ as their currency. Last year Zim had a 6% GPD growth rate, making it number 49 in the world with agriculture contributing 20% to GDP, though the GDP - per capita is a mere $500 (2011 est.) making it number 221 in the  world. In as much as Bob is a devil he has managed to defy odds. The media is obsessed with negative reports from Zimbabwe but some positive things are also taking place. To all those haters who are saying I must go to Zim my answer is simple; I didn’t go to England to learn English or New York to be an equity analyst; so its unnecessary for me to go to Zim when we can exactly do the same here.

      Gavin - 2012-05-30 11:42

7% of nothing is still nothing chucklehead. Empowering his people, I think you mean emasculating the masses, and empowering his pals. This great leader has taken a great country and turned it into a dead horse. Oh and you left the blood part out of the diamonds comment. I will celebrate mugarbages death, and then make it a public holiday ever year thereafter.

      Warren Mudge - 2012-05-30 12:16

so to all those who were massacred in matabeleland, and to all those who lost their farms and jobs in the farm land grabs, and to all those who lost their jobs, income pensions and dignity when the economy went to s#*t, and to the current miners who are treated like rabid dogs, the list is endless, in your african logic that is 100% acceptable, or is it the african culture that makes it acceptable to forgive and reward the tyrant mugabe and his cronies? The UN remains to be a toothless, useless animal utterly dependant on the subs of western nations to even survive.

      Jason - 2012-05-30 13:15

@lerato im going to take an amazing stab in the dark here and guess that you read all those amazing stats on google but actually have no clue what they mean. the interest rate, GDP and inflation is great well done on researching financial times in Zim. Its pretty easy for your GDp to strengthen and for inflation and interest rates to stay low when YOU HAVE NO INFRASTRUCTURE! if your not paying anything of coarse it stays low! AAAAAH and so we really want to have the nationalisation debate do we. Zimbabwe might be picking up but it will take centuries before the damage that uncle knob has done to be erased.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-05-30 13:23

@lerato: if he has done a wonderful job, and the country is flourishing, please explain why the approximated 4 million Zimbabweans are still living and working in SA? Why don't they all go back to their amazing country, so that our own people have jobs? Oh wait, you pulled those figures of success out your rotten c*nt Moron

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-05-30 14:38

Lerato, Lerato, Lerato. You are right. It is true. I remember the 7% growth rate jump happened just after I bought the last box of Cheeky Chilli in Kwekwe. Did I mentioned the last box......

  • arthur.hugh - 2012-05-30 10:11

WTF?! SERIOUSLY WTF?!!! United Nations can burn in hell as far as I'm concerned. I wrote off the Nobel Peace prize when they gave it to Obama (just when he put 30 000 more troops in the Middle East) now I'm writing off the UN too.

  • willem.wulfse - 2012-05-30 10:23

I was about to raise the April fools day issue but Belinda Buckley beat me to it. So much for the UN.

      delish7564 - 2012-05-30 11:02

Obviously I meant "lunatics have taken over the asylum" :)

  • Michael - 2012-05-30 10:42

I think this is a great idea, I just hope the UN appoints him to head up the promotion of that travel favourite, the budget tour of hell!

  • GavinPen - 2012-05-30 10:45

Please tell me that this is a sick joke!! How does someone who has decimated the tourism industry in their own country become a focus in a world desperately wishing to rid itself of tyranny, despair and suffering? Maybe having a travel ban imposed, been accused of human rights abuses and destroying an economy are all prerequisites on a CV now for this obviously prestigious honour!! What a bunch of ....!

  • edwardsch - 2012-05-30 10:46

Maybe the Mayans were right after all. World ends soon and this is why!! UNITED Nations - my foot!!!! More like the gathering of the demented !!!!

  • Faith - 2012-05-30 10:49

  • Kevin - 2012-05-30 11:05

  • Gavin - 2012-05-30 11:26

well paint me red - I thought the UN was about uniting nations and not putting the son of satan into a lucrative job. do they even know how many lives this germ has destroyed, how much money he's looted from his country ??? I think they need to change their name to useless nations.

  • roy.a.remy - 2012-05-30 11:30

  • Dianne - 2012-05-30 11:46

UN must have lost their minds, if they had any to begin with. This is absolutely ludicrous!

  • Christo - 2012-05-30 11:54

WTF......???? Robert who..., as LEADER for Tourism.... for the UN....??? NO really, this is a very scary sh ite....!

  • ginny.swart.1 - 2012-05-30 11:54

What are they smoking over at the UN?

  • DrGonzoSA - 2012-05-30 12:01

Hilarious. How has tourism in Zim fared during Bob's reign? Right down the toilet like everything else in the country.

      ftjsmit - 2012-05-30 13:41

Although I don't have any figures to claim this, I'm sure that however small amount that tourism has brought to Zim, it's most likely almost all the money that went into Zim. So it can claim to be the best industry (almost 100% of the economy), few countries can say that! WHAT A JOKE!!!

  • Francois - 2012-05-30 12:03

Wahahahaha what a joke - Mugabe as the UN "leader" for tourism?????

  • mthabine.justice - 2012-05-30 12:11

is this not a joke? maybe UN is!

  • Ted - 2012-05-30 12:11

Its a spelling mistake. It was meant to be 'leader for terrorism'.

  • Oom - 2012-05-30 12:24

  • lynne.vanvuren - 2012-05-30 12:34

Please tell me this is a joke??? April Fool's day in May???

  • Lordwick - 2012-05-30 12:35

Thank you UN for considering what Mugabe is really standing for.Even our former prez De klerk has just confirmed that Mugabe had no choice but to do what he did because the land was the issue. MANY THANK'S!!!

      Oom - 2012-05-30 12:58

Ha Ha Ha are such a stirrer ...

      Hannes - 2012-05-31 08:54

      Pathetic ne?

  • wesley.bischoff - 2012-05-30 13:13

The UN are the biggest bunch of useless tossers (besides the ANC). I wonder how much money they waste every year, and for what? How do you put sanctions against Mugabe, and then ask him to be the UN Tourism leader?

      Lordwick - 2012-05-30 13:35

They were looking forward to appease your likes....oh by the way that has been hard to figure out?

      Hannes - 2012-05-31 08:55

      Lordwick the TROLL

  • Sharon - 2012-05-30 13:25

I'm sorry but can anybody actually take the UN seriously after a statement like this? Somehow thought there were there to protect the human rights and dignity of the people, not to put "monsters" like Mr Mugabe who has time and again and continues to abuse these basic rights of the people, to put him on a pedastool. There goes my faith in them.

  • John - 2012-05-30 13:29

      John - 2012-05-30 14:46

  • Andre - 2012-05-30 13:33

There is a simple explanation. The UN is a satanic organisation, controlled by the Free Masons and Illuminati, amongst others, whose objective is to create a One World Order with one economy, one religion, one monetary system, etc. They do not necessarily do what is right, they do everything in order to achieve their ultimate goal!

      Barefoot - 2012-05-30 16:57

Lol very simple, and you know all this how?

  • West - 2012-05-30 13:47

The dirty political game. It`s probably linked to some deal regarding Rhodesia. They'd rather have him inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in.

  • tnmunyai - 2012-05-30 14:01

Long live President Robert Mugabe long live. The world has spoken. Those who are just shouting in news 24 and comenting bad about you will shurt their mouth. Zimbabwe is going foward.

      Patrick - 2012-05-30 14:09

Can somebody please translate what this moron is saying!

      Jaco - 2012-05-30 14:16

@ Patrick, he is saying that he is not very intelligent and spelling is very difficult, but is willing to work for minimum wage, because life suck in Zim.

      tnmunyai - 2012-05-30 14:49

What im saying is Pres Robert Mugabe is more inteligent than your father.

      Jaco - 2012-05-30 14:55

word of advice, don't go there boy.

      tnmunyai - 2012-05-30 15:54

      Where? Boy

  • Jaco - 2012-05-30 14:06

People are very emotional beings and it is amazing how people only talk out of their own view point. More amazing is the fact that Mugabe is being defended for his behavior....I will never understand the full extend of what happened in Zimbabwe, but one thing is sure that every South African must agree that we can and should never allow this to happen, cause we can not go anywhere else. O and in regard to the story, that like being nominated as the friendliest kid in school, it does not mean anything it only makes you feel good if your IQ is very low:)
