Mugabe casts ballot in Zimbabwe referendum

2013-03-16 14:36

Harare - Zimbabwe's veteran President Robert Mugabe cast his ballot on Saturday in favour of a new constitution that would considerably rein in his powers.

Africa's oldest leader appeared relaxed as he voted in Harare's Highfield township, flanked by his wife and daughter.

He urged Zimbabweans to ensure the referendum is carried out peacefully, amid allegations of kidnapping, beatings and two firebomb attacks.

"You can't go about beating people on the streets, that's not allowed, we want peace in the country, peace, peace," Mugabe told reporters after he voted.

"Peace begins with Robert Mugabe," he said.

The new constitution will curb some of the powers Mugabe has enjoyed during his 33-years in office.

It would limit him, and subsequent presidents to two five-year terms.

"If we vote 'yes' in this referendum it means our new constitution will have been made," he said.

Leonard. You need a visa to go to Europe. Seeing that I am constantly referred to as European and not African because of my skin color, why don't the government organize us european citizenship? Then i will be out of your hair! I'll sip some wine on the Champs-Élysées while the country is being burned to the ground.

Voting is so European ... Give us the African way.

      Hans Onrust - 2013-03-16 21:34

In Europe we have to work very hard to embrace thousands of refugees per month from Zimbabwe most of them in miserable conditions. How many people still live over there? Must be an horrifying place. Also heard that more than a million fled to SA. Does SA gets help from the E:U. to meet that problem ? Must be a heavy load for millions of already poor people.

      Hans Onrust - 2013-03-16 22:24

And for just comprehension, there is also a growing number of asylum seekers with very very sad stories from SA who got 'official tefugee status' in Europe and Canada. In Germany, which was a longtime very reluctant, hundreds of white farmers are already given asylum because they are not save in SA. Seems the ANC is radicalizing still. Or do 'circumstances' improve since Malema and Madame Mandela are seen for what they are ? Why was the whole top of secret service agencies replaced last year ? Were they focussing more inwards than outwards ? When will this Winnie be sentenced, hopefully soon, while waiting till she looks like her victims who were dug up last week, is not justice in my opinion.
