Mugabe 'frees prisoners as cash crunch bites'

2014-02-17 10:27

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has reportedly ordered the release of at least 2 000 prisoners at a time when government finances "are desperately stretched".

The development comes a few months after an official told a parliamentary committee that more than 100 prisoners had died from hunger and other nutrition-related illnesses, claims that were later denied by Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.

According to a newzimbabwe.com report Deputy Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services in charge of administration, Huggins Machingauta confirmed that at least 2 000 inmates were expected to be released.

The Herald reported that the presidential pardon was expected to benefit mostly females and juveniles.

The report said there were 18 980 prisoners in Zimbabwe’s 42 prisons.

Reminds me of a few years back when all the Cuban 'exiles' were being allowed into the USA with open arms....mean while Castro had opened his jails & asylums, allowing that lot to join the exodus. We'll probably have a similar invasion.

Roddwell open your eyes . He is releasing them so they don't die in prison and make him responsible. If they die outside, he will just blame them or someone else for creating the situation. And yes he probably hopes that they will run over the border to SA.

      Mark Liprini - 2014-02-17 11:52

Roddwell, your country has had a "cash crunch" as you put it for almost 25 years because of failed Marxist policies being forcibly implemented by an incredibly corrupt president and government, that have used selective genocide and brute force to achieve their aims and goals. Hyperinflation resulted. - your 'cash crunch". As a result foreign investment, tourism, agriculture and industry (all Forex earners - vital for your economy) were dealt almost mortal blows. Then to make it worse Mugabe introduced laws that make all foreign owned/based countries 521% Zimbabwean owned, and nationalized many small diamond mines - Hardly the stuff to encourage foreign investment and the inflow of Forex is it? Until you remove that man and his cronies from power and vote in level headed wise men and women into power who truly have the best interests of Zimbabwe at heart and NOT their own private agenda's, your beloved Zimbabwe will NEVER get back on its feet economically. Its your job to bring about change. Get at it dude, you can start the difference.

  • Jacqui Daane Van Rensburg - 2014-02-17 11:14

He probably hopes they will all move to South Africa.

  • Mark Liprini - 2014-02-17 11:22

Talk about a country imploding under mismanagement and corruption. Cant feed the nation because he destroyed the agriculture sector single -handedly, so he blows whatever forex he has to import food at horrendous costs, cant pay the teachers, defense force, police, doctors, whatever. Now he cant even keep the criminal element off the streets due to cost. What a shambles.

      Siegfriedt Eckert - 2014-02-18 23:27

Mark, what do you think is happening right on your doorstep?
