Mugabe home after Singapore 'check-up'

2012-07-07 18:23

Harare - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe arrived home on Saturday from Singapore where he went for a medical check-up amid increasing concerns about his health, state media said.

State television, which showed him alighting from a plane and shaking hands with the vice president Joice Mujuru and several senior government officials, said he looked "fit and strong".

Africa's oldest leader left Harare on Monday for what officials said was a "routine" health check.

The 88-year-old, who has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980, often makes visits to the city-state for medical treatment and underwent cataract surgery there last year.

Mugabe's wife Grace recently told state media that her husband was still fit, rises as early as 05:00 and consistently does his daily exercises.

"They say Mugabe is a very old man ... but he is very sound and lucid ... and very energetic, too," Grace was quoted as telling the Sunday Mail last month.

Mugabe's last visit to Singapore in April sparked rumours over his health, with media reports suggesting he was fighting for his life in hospital, allegedly for treatment of a cancer-related ailment.

WikiLeaks last year published a 2008 US diplomatic cable saying that central bank chief Gideon Gono had told the US ambassador at the time that Mugabe had prostate cancer and had been advised by doctors that he had less than five years to live.

We do not want this man to suffer - please take him and let him go that peace can be restored in the country he messed up so royally.

      philip.harris.967 - 2012-07-08 08:11

Christelle I understand where you are coming from and I am sure I share a lot of your sentiments. However the idea that Mugabes trip to Hell (hopefully) will somehow restore peace in Zim is utterly dense. When are people (african settlers in particular) going the wake the eff up and realise that Mugabe (and Zuma and Malema) are ONLY where they are because they have MASSIVE support. Mugabe is a hero throughout Africa. Unbelievable to me but true. Mugabe is a hero becuase , in Africans opinions he took the white man on ...and beat him. When Mugabe goes ....there will be another like-minded soul to replace him ...and history tells us the next one may well be worse....another hater of colonists. Look at SA ...the first President was a nice old guy but otherwise useless as a leader, the ANC got rid of him quickly and put the useless Mbeki in ....the next was even worse ....Showerhead Zuma....and who is waiting in the wings ....Malema. Wake up okes ........your future is no longer in Africa.

Mugabe: To me he is absolute proof of the fact that that god does not exist!

      Wilbert - 2012-07-09 00:05

Philip just because the masses in Africa have been denied a voice does not mean they have nothing to say. Mugabe has for years potrayed himself as the blackman who took on the whites and the mighty British and won. Many people did buy his anti-white rhetoric but not any more. Many Zimbabweans now know this was a smoke screen behind which he hid his repressive mischieve!

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-07-07 18:55

Of course it is a routine check up after which he's bound to check out .

  • Ian - 2012-07-07 18:56

ya, he went for a check up alright, went to check up on his bank balance, thieving, murdering , genocidal hoodlum, nothing more, nothing less

  • RockyBell - 2012-07-07 18:56

Zim Air has been grounded for months. Who supplies aircraft for his excellency, Robber Mugarbage's excursions? SA Goverment? Is that why aircraft to the tune of R2 billion is required to keep all "floated' in Southern Africa??????

  • smellarat.smith - 2012-07-07 19:03

Question remains for Mugabe fans: If Mugabe's policies are good for Zimbabwe (and he has been in power since 1980), why does he need to get medical check-ups outside of Zimbabwe? Yes, he brought the Whites down, and Private Enterprise too. And in the process he also brought the African population down. That is what hate does - it compels one to cut off one's nose to spite one's face. Rational members of the ANC, please take note.

      RockyBell - 2012-07-07 19:25

Spot on. But they will never admit it.......never. to big hypocrites. Mugarbage killed more people over a weekend than the apartheids government over 46 years. - fact ..take it or leave it!!!!

      philip.harris.967 - 2012-07-08 08:18

Mugabe and most post colonial african leaders have/had two main goals. 1. Beat whitey. 2.Turn back the clock to a tribal Africa. They have for the most part been hugely successful in both.....South Africa is slightly different in that it had / has huge inertia ....even the ANC cannot destroy it quickly. But they will ....there goals are no different to those of their hero Mugabe. More fool you or anyone who has all of their eggs in that basket.

In 1980 Pararenyatwa Hospital was one of the finest hospitals in Africa; clean, well equipped and with some of the best trained medical staff. Today, a nauseating smell of decay and death is everywhere. The ruling elite go to SA for their health requirements and the top dog, Mugabe and his family, go to Singapore. Povo can not afford the such luxurious, they still go to Pararenyatwa - to die! Every Mugabe trip to Singapore costs a cool US$ 3 million and he has had at least eight trips in the last 12 months alone. A cool US$ 24 million - that is more than what this government spends on all the country's clinics and hospitals in a year! In other words we spend more on the health of one individual than on the health of the remaining 10 million. There is greed but this is greed-gone-mad. Is it a wonder we are in a real mess!

      Boemo - 2012-07-09 20:52

      WHY DNT U FIX IT SR? - 2012-07-10 13:20

@boemo - I am going to take you seriously, just once, to see if I can get some sense into your head. After that, if you keep sprouting this uneducated bull, I will leave you to follow your hero into hell. Mr Mugabe has run Zimbabwe into the ground. If it is now your turn to have the land, then please take it, because it is wrecked. When you do have it, wait for the politicians to target you for your wealth and let them take it from you too. If that's what you think freedom is, then go for it. My idea of freedom is different and if a politician tries to take it from me, I have a constitution to support me. While you are shouting Viva Bob, his team are emptying Zimbabwe's coffers. When are you going to concern yourself with what is right and fair for you?
