Mugabe in Rome for beatification

2011-04-30 11:28

Rome - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe landed in Rome on Saturday to attend the beatification of late pope John Paul II at the Vatican, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Mugabe, 87, who obtained a special exemption from a European Union travel ban to make the journey, arrived in Rome's main airport on a special Air Zimbabwe flight with his wife Grace and a large delegation, the report said.

Mugabe was welcomed by Zimbabwe's ambassadors to Italy and to the Holy See amid strict airport security after landing just after 06:00 GMT.

I reckon mugabe should be beatified.

      Benny66 - 2011-04-30 12:07

It would be easier to beatify him than to beautify him.

      Simpiwe Cele - 2011-04-30 16:09

Hope that uncle bob and wife are restricted to the ceremony only and cant do a weeks worth of shopping afterwards. We all know how out "TOP" leader's wife likes to shop while her people starve !

      tryanything - 2011-04-30 17:54

Top leaders wives....some have more than one

  • Squeegee Pilot - 2011-04-30 11:46

    Can't they just keep him?

      Greenrain - 2011-04-30 13:44

On the bright side, he is old and hopefully wont last too much longer!

  • Issy Bee - 2011-04-30 11:48

Shouldn't he be excommunicated or something? For crimes against humanity. Sheesh, the Catholic church will befriend ANYBODY it seems.

      Redwine - 2011-04-30 12:02

More like executed I would reckon. Penalty should fit the crime according to the scriptures

      djg - 2011-04-30 12:07

go back to the 2nd world war for history on how they befriended the nazis

      Howzitekse - 2011-04-30 12:59

The Queen bestowed an honarory knighthood on dear Robert - and he revieved Hon. degrees from universities in UK and USA - even though he was acused of mass slaughter of opposition in Southern Zim (big crime). These were removed after the land grab thing (not so big crime). Like Hitler, it appears that he is also a good Catholic. Given enough time for history to be "revised", both Adolph and Robert may be "beatified"?

      Andrew - 2011-04-30 15:44

There must be a money trail there somewhere. God always needs moneeey.

  • m00t - 2011-04-30 11:57

only the church would approve of this

  • Marcell - 2011-04-30 11:57

How do you beautify a guy that is dead? The chaps from the Vatican are a weird bunch.

      Redwine - 2011-04-30 12:08

Why, dont you belief in prayers? The Catholics can fix anything for the right price even turn you into an angel (or saint) in this case. The like these words that common people find hard to understand makes the process all the better.

  • Deric Slabberts - 2011-04-30 12:11

Hopefully he does not make it back...

  • Fly By Night - 2011-04-30 12:17

somebody should take him out over there

  • HadEnuf - 2011-04-30 12:19

What about a DVT from the flight. Will be justice for his crimes.

  • Gatvol - 2011-04-30 12:35

Oops it seems news24 are bias or something. They deleted my comment, and it didn't even contain any swear words. Just something to do with bullet and brain

      m00t - 2011-04-30 12:44

LOL just your comment I am about 3 profiles down already

      tryanything - 2011-04-30 17:55

May he be struck by a bolt of lightning from the heavens.

      Dave Benoni - 2011-04-30 17:46

      Amen to that

  • deleagagu - 2011-04-30 13:37

How does this silly 'news' fall under special report! Are this reporters short of stories or simply bored???? Who cares if he even dies tomorrow?

      Greenrain - 2011-04-30 13:41

A lot of people care if he dies tomorrow, who would want to miss such a celebration!!

  • Freddie - 2011-04-30 15:07

If anybody bothers to check, I do not think that he flew to Rome on a 'special Air Zimbabwe Flight', but that he commandeered an Air Zimbabwe aircraft, that made a private flight to Rome. No fare paying passengers would be carried. But the fare paying passengers that should have traveled to wherever the aircraft was scheduled to fly, would have been unceremoniously dumped!

  • Kevin - 2011-04-30 15:28

My hope is that Mugabe's security can read this. I believe that the catholic church is cabable of almost anything. They wont apologise for the sexual abuse of children by priests, they helped Nazi war criminals escape justice after WW2, wont accept responsibility for the Spanish Inquisition and only a few years ago apologised to the long dead Galileo for ex communicating him for saying that the earth was round. Who in their right mind can expect them to sanction Mugabe?

      inyoka - 2011-04-30 15:58

Is the Pope not an ex Nazi?

  • inyoka - 2011-04-30 15:53

Bloody fool! How many hungry could he have fed with the money he is spending - and he is not even a Christian - such a shame!

  • FarmerBrown - 2011-04-30 16:14

This is ridiculous ! This man is a mass murderer. How dare these religous freaks consent to this. I hope the pope and all his bastard followers die a death equal to all Mugabe's victims. The church is morally bankrupt. Catholics the world over should resign in protest.

      tryanything - 2011-04-30 18:00

      They are also sheep

  • Sir Eidolon - 2011-04-30 16:51

I keep reading "Mugabe in Rome for beheading". We should be so lucky :(

  • Dave Benoni - 2011-04-30 18:00

Thiis could be an opportunity to arrest him for crimes against humanity.

  • Carl - 2011-04-30 18:02

First the abuse of children now they support mad Bob?

  • Madelane - 2011-04-30 19:08

Perhaps ask the Sicilian brotherhood to make him a special pair of concrete shoes to wear in the Med? Just a thought.

  • Christo - 2011-04-30 22:39

Mugabe + Roman Catholics = Evil

  • Mabhulwana - 2011-04-30 22:40

Did he also not attend the funeral of the previous Pope or was it the coranation of the current one?

  • Ouman - 2011-05-01 12:27

With all the recent gallavanting of bob to the East and now to Rome it's no wonder they don't have any money left for the election.

  • maseratifitt - 2011-05-01 19:08

The criminals of Africa aspire to papal levels of barbarism.

  • ed209 - 2011-05-01 21:11

What a wonderful church that forgives and forgets after a confession and penance (couple of $100000000). The best thing is you can do it every time you sin, ideal. I think they should beautify Mugabe for all is hard work and his continued destruction of those heretic..shudder Anglicans and his biblical sermons, calling Gays queers and dogs. This must be a proud moment for Catholics world wide.
