Mugabe taken to court over wife Grace's PhD

2014-10-01 13:01

Cape Town – The Zimbabwe National Students Union (Zinasu) is reportedly set to take President Robert Mugabe and the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) to court over the awarding of a controversial doctorate of philosophy degree to the country's First Lady.

The PhD was granted to Grace Mugabe, a 49-year-old former typist in the president's office, a few weeks ago - just months after she enrolled for the course.

Grace was capped by her husband along with other 3 274 graduates.

According to Voice of America, Zinasu said it would file a court case on Wednesday challenging Mugabe and the UZ administrators to publicise information regarding the awarding of the PhD to Grace.

Zinasu said it decided to take the matter to court after failing to get information on the doctorate from the vice chancellor and other UZ senior officials.

'Scandalous articles'

The union said it had mobilised more than 2 000 signatures of students from across the country's universities which it will attach to the court application, a report by the New said.

Meanwhile, the state-owned newspaper, The Herald claimed on Wednesday that there was a sinister agenda by the private and international media to embarrass the First Lady.

The Herald accused the international and local private media of publishing what it termed "scandalous articles" about Grace’s degree.

Zinasu has, however, maintained that it was not fighting the person of the First Lady but protecting the credibility of the country’s education system.

A recent report by AFP quoted the union as saying that the degree awarded to Grace was "a serious insult to the students, the intelligentsia, doctors, professors and lecturers associated with the University of Zimbabwe".

Gilbert Mutubuki, Zinasu president said: "Any recipient of such a sham miraculous doctorate should feel ashamed unless if their humanity sense and guilty conscience is no more."

      Ri?ovhona Tsaa Tsa?wani - 2014-10-01 13:27

I wonder why 20 people don't like your post cos you are only asking a question.

      Gary Guy - 2014-10-01 13:41

Mugabe and honour in the same sentence.. a bit of an oxymoron.

      Deeked De Dose - 2014-10-01 13:49

Nope, you don't enrol in a course if it is honorary.... it is bestowed on you for your contribution to whatever it is....

      Vikram Moodley - 2014-10-01 14:11

Well at least it took her a couple of months. Our very own Pallo Jordan got his PhD in no time at all .... literally.

      Riëtte Nöthling - 2014-10-01 14:55

Honorary PhD after a few months? She would have to be a serious genius to get that done? She only got it because she's Mugabe's wife! Besides, how can a degree is Psychology benefit her when neither she or her husband has any humanity in them??

      Ronald - 2014-10-01 15:42

Dis-grace now has a new definition: to make jokes at the cost of the wife of the president of Zimbabwe, alternatively to receive a university degree that normally takes 3-4 years by condensing time with Mugabe developed quantum mechanics down to two months.

      Terrylin Backpackers - 2014-10-01 18:35

Why only thumbs up or thumbs down and not middle finger?

  • daddycassanova - 2014-10-01 13:20

Motofogo... No, it's not an honourary PhD.

      Motofogo Mulilo - 2014-10-01 13:26

They are given out so much I was wondering what difference her's make.

      michael.tetley.35 - 2014-10-01 13:32

Apparently not. One doesn't have to enrol in order to be awarded an honorary PHD.

      Wimpie Nel - 2014-10-01 14:17

She flew that B767 so much to China, might as well give her a pilots license too, while they are at it.

  • Jackie Morgan Dickson - 2014-10-01 13:23

Ludicrous! Single handed trashed any credibility for qualifications received in that country. As if he hasn't broken everything else already. He is evil and the rest of the world looks on and does nothing to help. what about basic rights??? Who can protect the people from this maniac?

  • Eugene Fourie - 2014-10-01 13:24

what she need a PHD for? Surely BOB's your uncle has billions stashed away overseas..not like she has to go looking for work anymore..or does she want to be called "Dr" in the high circles they move around in..?lol

      John Smith - 2014-10-01 13:31

      Dr Ous ?

  • Bernd Kankowski - 2014-10-01 13:40

Typical from African leaders. Very few are properly educated and then they are given honorary doctorates. Students have to study 3 -7 yrs for their degrees and Mugabe's wife is given a Phd after a few months. Makes a mockery of the education system. And Mugabe's side kicks are accusing the media of trying to embarrass the "lady". They are doing it themselves, but they are too stupid to realize it.

  • louis.elst - 2014-10-01 13:44

Mugabe you have embarrassed the so called First Lady and she has embarrassed herself for excepting the degree So stop blaming others , This is the real world and not wonderland

  • Willa Prinsloo - 2014-10-01 13:44

  • SteveJ - 2014-10-01 13:46

      Mbizi Heart - 2014-10-01 15:36

this has nothing to do with Grace, this is about the thousands of Zim university Alumni that worked hard for their education and the reputation of their institutions is now as much trash as that doctorate. Zimbos treasure the fact that they are EDUCATED, Her backers will not get away with this so easily

      JohnnoBfree - 2014-10-01 16:02

Leaflet you dumb @ss. It's got nothing to do with her. What's the point of studying for a degree when they get handed out like shopping leaflets.

It is not only bogus degrees like these - we have people buying question papers and acing every test in class and the end-of-year exams, in South African varsities. Look out for those office workers charged with the task of photocopying at Varsities.

  • Pierre Jacobs - 2014-10-01 16:56

Surely the Phd. should be in corruption and farm invasions rather than degenerate a subject like philosophy? No one will employ her with this qualification. She can display it on her chest like Idi Amin used to display is Coke tops as medals. Same value. One cannot even say you voted for this buffoon and his co-accused because the elections were rigged as well. Do like Egypt, Tunisia and Hong Kong. Protest.

These young lions are very brave to take on the "mighty" uncle Bob. I'm fully behind them, nobody is untouchable under the sun. Robert is an old man full of mischief all the way but I guess those who hold him in high esteem in Zim for freeing Zim from the illegitimate rule of Ian Smith are to blame for his total disregard of democracy in his country. He did his bit in freeing Zim but he is being allowed to distroy the same Zim he set out to free, what a contradiction.

  • Joel Sabela - 2014-10-02 07:27

Many SA's idoliolise Mugabe, may be its also time to emulate 'this black empowerment'

Guys, give the lady a break. I have conferred a PHD on lady Grace. When the opportunity arose she bought shoes worth millions of dollars. It took her time to accumulate all the shoes she has. She even got CHEESED off when a travel ban on her was imposed. The sanctions really affected her travels and future purchases. She went through a really tough time. People at least give her a break and for her being a future Presidential candidate, GOOD luck to her. With her typing and secretarial skills and being the companion of No 1, I don't really think that she could be any worse than her husband.
