Nato a terrorist group, says Mugabe

2011-08-08 15:21

Harare - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Monday brandished Nato a 'terrorist' organisation over attacks in Libya, saying the military alliance wanted to kill veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"So you get mad people in Europe. Mad people who refuse and reject the truth, mad people who defy international law," Mugabe told a gathering to remember fighters of the country's liberation struggle.

"Look at what they are doing in Libya, it is Nato against international law.

"That's why I say Nato is now a terrorist organisation as well. If it defies international law."

Mugabe, who has governed Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, accused Western nations of wishing to kill Gaddafi.

"It [Nato] has lost it's legitimacy, it has become terrorist and beware this they can do on any other African country than Libya. We must always be in a state of preparedness," Mugabe said.

"They seek to kill Gaddafi. They have in fact deliberately killed some of his children.

"Now when they do that deliberately, it is exactly what the Taliban and al-Qaeda do - what is the difference in terms of what they [Nato] are doing?"

The Western coalition behind the bombings of Gaddafi’s military assets, co-ordinated by Nato and mostly waged by France and Britain, launched its campaign under a UN mandate to protect civilians from a violent government crackdown.

The 87-year-old Mugabe also slammed former colonial ruler Britain for imposing sanctions on him and his close allies in government, and said Zimbabwe will "hit back" at over 400 British companies operating in the country.

"We cannot continue to receive the battering of sanctions without hitting back," Mugabe said.

"Why should a company that belongs to Britain be allowed to continue to mine our gold in this country?"

Mugabe, who formed a power sharing government with his former rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in 2009, reiterated the country must hold elections after the finalisation of a constitution-making process.

Under Zimbabwe's unity accord, signed after violent and inconclusive presidential elections in 2008, a new constitution must be approved by referendum before new general elections.

The constitution-writing process is running a year behind schedule.

Nobody cares Bob, we're just waiting for your policy with Satan to mature so he can come and collect. Seriously, a 90 year old president. The people of zimbabwe need to handle their sh*t urgently.

      Tonsil - 2011-08-08 15:59

Poor English - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Monday brandished Nato a 'terrorist' organisation. "If you brandish something you hold it in a threatening way. eg. He appeared in the lounge brandishing a knife"

      Daemos1 - 2011-08-08 16:24

I think brandish can be used in this way, but it's not a very common use of the word. The indication that Mugabe is holding them up so that otthers can scorn them as well.

      DEVILS SON - 2011-08-08 16:28

that ugly ballbag is not my old man, hes the janitor

      Welleducated - 2011-08-08 16:36

100% spot on, it is not a policy but a contract. When Mugabe signed the contract, Malema and a lot of other racist Africans signed the same contract. One day is one day and the souls will be collected.

Errol, I think you are joking. Mugabe is sh*t scared. He knows he is next.

      john - 2011-08-08 15:54

He's right, though. Unlike these Islamist knuckleheads who promise "the Mother of all Wars" and then give up after three days, Bob has the wisdom to know that you don't mess with the West. Push the West too far and international law isn't going to save you. After a decade of peace at the end of the Cold War, the developing world started getting uppity and thinking that, just because the West wasn't kicking butts, that they'd lost the will and the spine to do so. I think recent events in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya have put that little theory to bed.

      W Mukori - 2011-08-08 17:55

Mugabe has been itching to hit back at JZ ever since JZ criticised him in Zambia a few months ago. SADC is meeting again in Angola in a few weeks time and Mugabe likes to throw a few jabs when the opponent is not watching. JZ supported the UN resolution that allowed NATO to bomb Libya. So the criticism is against his traditional target, the British, and JZ. That is killing two birds with one stone! If JZ pressure Mugabe at the next SADC meeting, the latter will attribute it to the two's difference on Libya and NATO and nothing to his repressive rule in Zimbabwe!

MUGABE, speaking the truth & sense.

  • Indomitable Momo - 2011-08-08 15:38

No matter what he's done, he is speaking sense here. Western powers have been waging illegal wars for years. Sadly the racists who comment on this site will surely label him as crazy when he is the one speaking the truth.

      Daemos1 - 2011-08-08 15:43

I don't think he's crazy, he's just too old to be president. Thye average age of african peresidents is about 70 years, this man needs to exhibit some grace and then maybe people will take him seriously again.

      Jacques Jones - 2011-08-08 15:45

sure i do not agree fully with what nato is doing but ol' bob should rather keep quiet as people in glass houses should not throw stones

      Tolerant - 2011-08-08 15:54

The UN voted for the bombing, so it was legalised. Gaddafi was never voted in, the only illegal is Gaddafi.

      Olavin - 2011-08-08 17:17

The UN was never voted into power either. They are illegal. Same as its little brother, NATO.

      slg - 2011-08-08 17:41

Scary that you would think this. Do you really want SA to become Zimbabwe? Do you want to be beaten up next elections if you don't vote for the party of your choice?

      slg - 2011-08-08 18:03

Sorry, that should be the ruling party.

      W Mukori - 2011-08-08 18:35

@Indomitable Momo Mugabe is talking "sense here". Is he? Gaddafi, like Mugabe, has never given his people a say on whether they wanting him to continue ruling them or not and the dictator has been in power for over thirty years. When they had a chance to make their views on the matter known his reply was plane enough: "Submit or I will kill you all." We all know why Mugabe has sided with Gaddafi even when the latter started bombing his own people: because Mugabe himself has shown the same disregard for human suffering and lives in the interest of retaining power. The impending demise of Gaddafi gives Mugabe the jitters because he knows this is the prelude to his own end. Momo, do you ever think that may be the people of Libya want and deserve the same rights and freedoms that you now take for granted in SA? I do not believe you do. If you did you would not be saying anyone, a tyrant at that, advocating bombing the people for demanding these rights talks sense!

  • Nepster10 - 2011-08-08 15:41

Like minded with Malema. What good are you doing to the Zimbabweans yourself. Are you not the one killing your own people you are leading during election time. You are a worst terrorist your self and the IC is waiting for you and Gaddafi.

This guy has a fair point to certain degree, how many innocent people have died in the hands of these terriorists as opposed to the number of innocent people dead in the hands of the US Military? I like what he stands for, I hate the person & the means he chose to resorts to in order to keep what he stands for alive

      slg - 2011-08-08 17:38

One has to focus on the underlying and guiding intentions. There's a big difference. Terrorists aim to terrorize people into doing that they say and live how they want them to live. The US intentionally avoids harm to civilians. It goes to great lengths to avoid such harm, and it aims to empower and free people from oppression. A big difference.

      W Mukori - 2011-08-08 18:43

The difference is they don't do it intentionally. In fact they go to great lengths to avoid harm to civilians. Al-Qaueda intentionally target civilians to try and terrorize people. There's a big difference.

  • Grant - 2011-08-08 16:45
