Robert Mugabe 'a complex character'

2012-07-10 12:39

Cape Town - President Robert Mugabe is a complex character who claims to champion the interests of the poor, yet his government has worsened the plight of ordinary Zimbabweans through a raft of skewed laws and ruthless actions, leader of the smaller MDC faction Welshman Ncube has reportedly said.

According to Newsday, Ncube said that although Mugabe had "emerged a hero" at independence in 1980, " he had turned tyrant after presiding over the impoverishment of the masses and ruined the country’s economy as he unleashed his dictatorship in the guise of defending the revolution".

"No doubt he is a complex character. When you talk to Mugabe, you can hear in his mind he talks of the interests of the people," said Ncube.

"How then you reconcile what he says and what he and his Zanu-PF party goes on to do, you then ask yourself ‘What is wrong with the man?’”

Ncube said history had already made judgement of Mugabe and his legacy.

"No matter his sincerity or not in championing the cause of the people, the truth is that under his watch the people of Zimbabwe were impoverished."

Describing a complex character in two sentences is over simplistic.

      oneant.kasinski - 2012-07-10 12:57

there is nothing complex about a dictatorial psychopath. there's a reason one doesn't change a constitution to allow for more than 2 terms in office. and this is one of them.

      Jono - 2012-07-10 12:59

he is in my top 5 mistakes this world should never of received!

      eduardhomes - 2012-07-10 13:14

the ANC is looking at Zim as an example.....Anyway, I was hoping that the majority of people would try and avoid that situation, because then, SA would face hunger, collapsed economy, smiling politicians, sky high crime levels, poor health, power disruptions, terrible roads and the masses still in denial and blaming it on apartheid. What SA could do, is get another party with strong, educated & honest leaders to get SA back on track.

      Babka - 2012-07-10 13:27

The reporters always lay the blame of the Zim situation at the feet of Mugabe. People don't see that the average African loves struggle. They enjoy their poverty and being wretches that is why they keep voting this kind of leadership into power over and over and over. A leader like Mugabe makes it possible for the average African to sit around unemployed and bask in the sun making a man like Mugabe responsible for their hardship. These dictatorships, of which we soon will be one, fits in perfectly with the African culture. I wish whites would get on with their lives and stop fretting about these lost cases. They enjoy their poverty.

      mark.john.94695459 - 2012-07-10 13:34

@Babka, in as much as I ould like to disagree with you, I am afraid I have to agree. There is no other conclusion that one can reach when one looks at how governments govern their countries (african)

      Babka - 2012-07-10 13:58

@Rooster. It isn't possible to train them to be functional. Will never happen. We need to accept that they live on their own plane within the structures of the world. When we got here they were 1000 years behind and they will never catch up. Now with a world that is even moving faster due to electronics, with most of them not knowing how to switch on a computer, the divide between rich and poor is going to increase 10 fold. For our own peace of mind we have to find a way to function with all of this dead wood around us. Because if we leave them, they will die of hunger. Not that they are not suffering enough as yet, but it will cause a complete collapse if all of us suddenly leave the place for them to run. The intelligence levels are simply not there genetically.

      gieljam.gomtor - 2012-07-10 14:04

Demon decomposed character should be more fitting.

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-07-10 14:15

Babka, your comments are too simplistic and generalise too much, although I can understand where and how you form this opinion, it is not fair to the many educated, hard working black people, people that do want more for their families and their generations to follow, I acn understand your frustrations when people blindly follow this corrupt government, voting them into power time and again inspite of the corruption and lack of basic services, I believe it's completely wrong to assume all black people have the same opinions you have branded them with.

      merven.halo - 2012-07-10 14:53

A complex character - wow, now that is a nice way saying some one is a poephol. I can think of many complex characters like Julius Malema, Vavi, Zuma etc.

      TshilidziPhuravhathu - 2012-07-10 15:50

@ali.mutlak.5 Let me guess you posted that comment while sitting in SA right? where where you have been most of your life...

      ann.murray.9279 - 2012-07-10 16:01

PRIZE PRATT, if you ask me ...

      Revelgen - 2012-07-10 16:03

Yes, is he a tyrant? Or a plain crook? Or insane? Or a thief? Or a murderer? Or a hypocrite? A complex character indeed.

      Smell - 2012-07-10 18:18

Hitler and Charles Manson were complex characters too. And Ali Mutlak, it is Zimbabwe that has gone to hell under Mugabe. It is not the British that has chronic problems with hunger and disease. And Britain's Prime minister does not have to travel to Singapore for decent medical care. Your misplaced pride and arrogance are pathetic in context of the reality. Mugabe hates the "settlers" because of bitter envy of their success. In his mindset, success indicates "stealing" from others, because his type (and I am not referring to an ethnic grouop here) lacks the culture and capacity for creating wealth themselves). So instead of viewing the "settler" farmers as assets, he viewed them as a group that "takes away" from others. The subsequent collapse of the agricultural industry in Zimbabwe has proved Mugabe to be absolutely wrong in that perspective. But he has been too thick and angry to recognize his tragic folly. So, in frustration and anger after 20 years of failed governance, Mugabe has essentially resorted to removing the islands of success in his society, to make the miserable, including himself, feel better about themselves. All with predictable consequences. No worries Ali, I know you will not get it. But until people like you get it, you will have lots of hungry children to contend with.

      poloyatonkim - 2012-07-10 14:06

Welshman Ncube is staying in a luxury house in santon, he knows nothing about poverty.

      Advocatus.Diabolis - 2012-07-10 15:23

@polo... he neva claimed to know anything about it, he is talking about Mugabe and the state of the nation despite what he claims to be a champion for. People dont always need to be in a situation to comment about it.

  • Robin - 2012-07-10 12:59

"... who claims to champion the interests of the poor...", yet around half the (poor) population of his country have fled to neighbouring countries to try and make a living !!!

  • Steve - 2012-07-10 12:59

No matter what anyone says, the facts speak for themselves. Mad Bob is an insane dictator that has brought only impoverishment to his people and the demise of a once-beautiful and productive country. The cANCer government of SA seems hell-bent on doing the same.

  • dewalds3 - 2012-07-10 13:02

'a complex character who claims to champion the interests of the poor, yet his government has worsened the plight of ordinary' - which is of course very different to our own ANC-chronies..

  • - 2012-07-10 13:05

I find it too easy to get het up about this man. The truth is that, if you look objectively at how Zimbabwe has fared under his rule, the majority of Zimbabweans have not been able to improve their standard of living. The 'repatriated' farms aren't producing enough to sustain the population's food requirements and he has, on several occasions, spoken of nationalizing the mines and schools when there clearly is a lack of expertise to keep them going. I'm afraid that a politician's promise is not worth anything......

  • peter.ndamase - 2012-07-10 13:09

He is a good example of flaws in Democracy.

  • lynn.syme.1 - 2012-07-10 13:11

Sound familiar? "ANC will rule unti Jesus comes". You are watching a dictator in the making in SA.

  • antin.herinck - 2012-07-10 13:15

  • gerhard.vermeulen.77 - 2012-07-10 13:33

Correction please... Robert Mugabe is a dum ass murdering bastard!

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-07-10 13:37

Many any African head of state live in rude luxury whilst their subjects live in perpetual poverty. What baffles me the most is why the people keep voting these leaders into power whilst they have shown in no uncertain terms of their obvious disregard for them.

  • marais.adriaan - 2012-07-10 13:54

To call Mugabe a 'complex chatacter' is just euphemistic for saying that he is so insane, he couldn't spot sanity with the Hubble telescope.

  • Jango - 2012-07-10 14:04

I am still blaming the 400 white farmers left. Need stronger policies to deal with this minority - as 12 000 000 majority need protecting. It's all the fault of these colonialists I tell you!

  • danie.smit.587 - 2012-07-10 15:40

The ordanary black person did better under Ian Smith while rule, with the whole world except apartheid SA imposing strict sanctions. It was the bread basket of Africa, with a stronger currancy than SA, now you cannot even carry the zim dollars you need to buy one bread. Speak to all the Zimbabweans in SA today they would all confirm they had a economically better life under Smith.

  • lmapheto - 2012-07-10 15:40

According to the history of leadership dating back to biblical times Pres Mugabe is a Legend, the greatest ruler of all times in Zimbabwe...personally i believe that most African are more comfortable being oppressed by one of their own...Look at how Mubarack held Egypt with one hand and no one complained until a foreigner imposed... The people of Zimbabwe should be left to solve their own problems, believe you me they have the solutions...its about timing...Good luck to the people of Zimbabwe in all their endeavours especially Economic growth.

      effect.molepo - 2012-07-11 18:43

Imabetho you are the messenaries of the mad bob how much do u get to kill for him?

  • Provence - 2012-07-10 16:11

So is the ANC any different, as matter of fact is any other African president different. Listen how they love their people, they love them so much they kill them through starvation, no jobs, high crime, stealing state funds, no education, no medical service (corruption in all of the above). Sadly Mugabe is no different to anyone ruling in Africa.

  • antin.herinck - 2012-07-10 17:37

And this is news, what this timid nitwit says? Like saying "Ted Bundy had a peculiar way with women" or "Jeffrey Dahmer had a funny hobby". RM is a psychopathic mass murderer who's responsible for plunging millions into misery and has destroyed a country, that will not recover for the next 40 years. Not: "complex" -evil!

  • LouisPVenter - 2012-07-10 19:50

He is a very complex man as so are many others who support his ways. Anybody who is brain dead and does not have any active brain cells is complex because no one with 2 or more active brain cells can understand their selfish stupid thinking and actions.

  • ndlovu.bhekinkosi - 2012-07-11 05:59
