Johannesburg - Zimbabwe's main state-controlled daily on Wednesday praised President Robert Mugabe for sacking his vice president and eight ministers, saying it was "morally correct".

Harare lawyer Jonathan Samkange told The Herald: "They are serving at the pleasure of the president and that is why when he appoints he is not expected to consult anyone".

In an unprecedented move, Mugabe, 90, on Tuesday fired vice president Joice Mujuru, seven ministers - including veteran nationalist and minister of presidential affairs Didymus Mutasa - and one deputy minister.

Mujuru led a faction of Zanu-PF that was battling with a faction led by justice minister Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed Mugabe.

Mujuru was accused of corruption and being behind a plot to kill or oust the president, but she denied this.

Many analysts believe she had simply become too popular within the party and therefore represented a threat to Mugabe's 34-year-long hold on power.

She had been vice president for 10 years.

Mugabe still has to announce his two new vice presidents.

The Herald has in the past two months run several stories discrediting Mujuru.
