Cape Town - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is set to convene a special summit on Zimbabwe to co-ordinate efforts to mobilise resources to finance the country’s harmonised elections, according to President Robert Mugabe.

The Herald reported on Tuesday that the summit proposal was pitched by the bloc's facilitator to the Global Political Agreement, South African President Jacob Zuma,  and endorsed by SADC on the sidelines of the 21st Ordinary Session of the African Union General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Addressing supporters who gathered to welcome him at Harare International Airport on his return from Addis Ababa, Mugabe said SADC was "seized with efforts to co-ordinate the mobilisation of resources to finance the harmonised elections".

"We updated SADC on the conclusion of the constitutional reform process and that we are now ready to go for elections and appealed for assistance. So they said they will convene a meeting and see how they can assist us," said Mugabe.

The elections to be held later this year are expected to end the country's shaky unity government formed between Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in 2009 following disputed 2008 elections.

A new Constitution was one of the key reforms agreed under the coalition deal.

Mugabe signed the new charter into law last week, paving the way for new polls to be held, although the parties in the GNU remain miles apart over the exact timing of the vote.
