Cape Town – The United States has donated an additional $10m towards addressing looming food shortages in Zimbabwe, according to a report, bringing the total assistance in 2013 from the US to Zimbabwe for hunger and relief to $25m.

US Agency for International Development (USAID)'s mission director in Zimbabwe, Melissa Williams, said humanitarian assessments continued to indicate that significant numbers of people in Zimbabwe required seasonal assistance to meet their minimum food needs, according to VOA.

The US assistance comes a few weeks after the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee revealed that at least 2.2 million Zimbabweans faced hunger and that they would need food assistance early next year.

The committee also revealed that 1.5 million people were food insecure.

Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party blames sanctions for the food shortages while the opposition Movement for Democratic Change cites violent land grabs and Zanu-PF's failure to introduce a comprehensive land policy as the problem.

Zimbabwe started experiencing serious food deficits over a decade ago after President Robert Mugabe's government embarked on a violent land reform programme.

At least 4 000 white commercial farmers were evicted from their farms.
