Zim land grabs: At least 163 white farmers to be evicted

2015-03-05 10:57

Cape Town – Zimbabwe's lands and resettlement minister Douglas Mombeshora has reportedly moved to evict at least 163 white commercial farmers in Mashonaland East as government intensifies its war against white farmers.

This comes a few days after President Robert Mugabe vowed to expel the country's last remaining white farmers from their land.

"We don't need a white man to continue to guide us. No. We are now equipped with skills," Mugabe was quoted as saying during a party to celebrate his 91st birthday in Victoria Falls last Saturday.

According to New, more than 160 white commercial farmers in Mashonaland East province will soon be removed from their properties as the government claims they are occupying the land illegally.

Food shortages

The government purported that scores of white commercial farmers were still occupying vast swathes of land under the guise of special sectors protection, yet they are engaging in farming activities which are not covered by the scheme, the report said.

The land grabs were set to continue despite Mugabe publicly admitting a few days before his birthday celebrations that he blundered by giving ill-equipped black farmers vast tracts of farmland seized from whites under his controversial land reforms.

"I think the farms we gave to people are too large. They can't manage them," he was reported as saying.

Meanwhile, News Day reported on Thursday that the European Union had warned Mugabe over his threat for more land grabs saying the move could ruin business re-engagement efforts between Zimbabwe and the EU block.

The EU recently lifted restrictions on most government officials, but retained Mugabe and his wife Grace on the sanctions list.

"Whites will never own land in Zimbabwe"

Mugabe and his ruling Zanu-PF party launched the land reforms in 2000, taking over white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks.

Mugabe said the reforms were meant to correct colonial land ownership imbalances.

At least 4 000 white commercial farmers were evicted from their farms.

The land seizures were often violent, claiming the lives of several white farmers during clashes with veterans of Zimbabwe's 1970s liberation struggle.

Critics say the redistribution sparked food shortages and contributed to a massive inflation.

Here we go again! Bob do you enjoy seeing your people starving? Clearly you have a bad heart!!!

      Jeremy Thewasp - 2015-03-05 11:06

We know Zuma is the King of Corruption but Mugape has to be Africa's biggest racist. Once these 163 farmers are evicted, Zim might as well turn off the lights..

      Andrew Terr - 2015-03-05 11:20

What the hell is wrong with the white farmers?Scorched earth policy is the answer.Get the hell out of there and leave scraps.Poison the fields.Burn the homesteads.Leave them with f-all.Barbarians!!!

      Shaun Smith - 2015-03-05 11:28

The problem is that it isn't just Bob. There are hundreds of thousands who share a similar sentiment. Same in SA. Unfortunately they will have to learn the hard way, just like the millions of Africans before them.

      NickvanGraan - 2015-03-05 11:36

      I see the News24 Zanu-PF thumbs down brigade haven't arrived yet ..

      Joseph Shange - 2015-03-05 11:36

I dont believe they will evict these farmers, don't believe everything in the media.

      NickvanGraan - 2015-03-05 12:56

Ah, the News24 Zanu-PF thumbs down brigade have finally arrived ...fashionably late as usual!

      Ann Murray - 2015-03-05 12:58

Only brain-washed people respond with thumbs-down. Pretty scary to see how many of them there are. Sheeple - start thinking like human beings with flesh and blood!!!!

      Buzz McBar - 2015-03-05 13:19

Burn the buildings, sell the equipment and salt the earth. Then leave. You don't want to give the freeloaders and kind of advantage. (Then again their mental capacity is the primary disadvantage).

      Mark Tunstall - 2015-03-05 13:32

Yep.. "We don't need a white man to continue to guide us. No. We are now equipped with skills," Mugabe was quoted. Ai ai ai they are so "skilled". "I think the farms we gave to people are too large. They can't manage them," he was reported as saying. Their country is starving and the begging bowls are put out. They bite the hand that feeds them. Let them rot.

      Charl Albertus Coetzee - 2015-03-05 15:40

What scares me is the 50/50 split in the likes and dislikes. This would mean that a large number of readers agree that whites have no right to live in Africa. This would beg the question then if blacks have right to live outside of Africa. Would Africa survive in such a world, especially if no help was rendered from outside? To Robert, if you hate whites so much then evict their language, customs, luxuries, money and technologies as you did with the people and integrity alike.

      Good story to tell

      Simon Stamp - 2015-03-05 11:44

Dare I say it,,,but is any white farmer stil in simbabwe not a bit stupid? I know to leave everything behind just like that is very difficult but there are many African countries that will welcome experianced white farmers whit open arms.

  • Chris Strydom - 2015-03-05 11:06

White farmers have only brought prosperity, contributed to to Zim's GDP and job creation to Zim and now for being white they must leave. Some black africans still struggle with a huge inferiority problem and it's clouding their judgement and then everybody must suffer

      Andrew Terr - 2015-03-05 11:23

I compare this to idiots without a clue how to drive ,hijacking motor vehicles.

  • Peter Clark - 2015-03-05 11:10

  • Wikus Swart - 2015-03-05 11:23

You know what - they should pack up their stuff and just burn the whole farm to the ground!Every last thing! Make it utterly useless for that effing government. They're gonna do it themselves anyway. Save them the trouble. Then come to SA and and help us prevent the same from happening here. Just brings those R4s too... I know I'm ranting now, but bloody hell this is ludicrous.

      Genet Joobs - 2015-03-05 11:56

      Well said ... agreed.

      Joe Oppenheim - 2015-03-05 13:34

No need. The new Bob-supported land owners destroyed the existing farm assets as they didn't know how to farm. The farms are now derelict.

      Stan Ndaba - 2015-03-05 15:51

O so they are allowed to come to SA??

  • Sipho IThequota - 2015-03-05 11:26

then they ask why are most white people so racist.

      Gawie Gorrel - 2015-03-05 11:53

@Tookie the racist Angel emerged from her daily sleep and is very disturbed because she found out nothing is for free. AND SHE MUST WORK TO EAT,DAMN

      Riëtte Nöthling - 2015-03-05 11:55

Oh please Tookie, the remaining Zimbabweans are just going to become a burden to us in SA, you really think thousands of them live and work is SA because Zim is wonderful & prosperous? Get real my dear, they are going to be starving more than they are already, and you can just sit en watch that.

      Solomon Morwape - 2015-03-05 11:58

Tookie has a point. Did the racism begin with Mugabe's acts in Zimbabwe?

      Hamish Gray - 2015-03-05 12:06

@Tookie, do you feel pleased with yourself now that you have made your sweeping generalisation. Who is getting a taste of their own medicine? The white ZIMBABWEAN farmers? Are they not citizens in their own country? Of course racial discrimination (something that is not only a white preserve) precedes President Mugabe's racial discrimination against his white compatriots, but you somehow think that his discrimination is somehow justified by the sins of white Zimbabweans forebears? You are a racial bigot yourself and very naive to boot. Do you think that the discrimination ends at the colour line? Are the Matabele accorded the same treatment as the Mashona? What about he tribal violence we saw taking place in Kenya not too long ago? The attacks on black African foreigners here in South Africa? These are all manifestations of the same thing, i.e. supremacist thinking or believing that one's identification group is more deserving than another. Now are you sure that discrimination is really just a white thing?

      Shirley Solomon - 2015-03-05 12:10

Theres racism all over the world. In every day south african lives when you out on the street you never come across half the things that people spew in these sites. Sad to read. Out of all the countries that could of made a " rainbow" nation work, SA had the best chance ever. But it does all come down to leadership unfortunately. Not the leadership party but the man running it.

Are there any white farmers left in Zim? I wonder if all of them are gone what his next political game would be? I have been to Zim on occasion, know a few people that came from Zim, most of them said soon after Robert came into power he first through underhanded tactics ensured the power stays with him, he started controlling the media, parliament if you dared cross him you were taken care off, first not in the open but later with trained hit squads. In 2006 I went to Victoria Falls the same Elephant Hills Hotel, my bar man the one day was all beaten up, he said Robert is coming to town so 2 weeks before hand he beats up everyone who just seems to show a hint to oppose him. To me it sounded like the Gestapo of Germany. Next when Morgan came to be, he started with the new enemy, the white colonists as he called them, so he started taking over private businesses & basically ran them to the ground. Then when all started falling apart he looked for foreign help hence most of the countries mineral assets were sold off on the cheap to the Chinese. Sound familiar? So I read an article on we are not a failed state but we are heading there, our only saving grace is that Zoomer still has a lot of Western Powers he needs to answer to, but as soon as their time is up he will move into phase 2 of his domination plan, it's already started the EFF is opposing him, now they are imploding in on themselves, Zoomer swings the bat ton now, soon he will control the media houses, slowly take away our freedoms, become the next Robert.

Some people say only whites are racist!Mmmm I guess that is a total myth of reading your comment.

      Heather Mae - 2015-03-05 11:42

Mandela was and still is a great man. He realised that not all whites were scum (you seem to forget that a lot of us actually fought against apartheid and the NATs). But then you have tunnel vision and so be it. You are entitled to your own racist opinion just like whites are entitled to theirs.

      Henno Dippenaar - 2015-03-05 11:53

Because Mandela was not brain dead like Mugabe. Mandela was clever and had vision...something you are obviously lacking .

      Thula Buthelezi - 2015-03-05 11:54

Heather Mae, listening to the radio and not agreeing with apart policies is not fighting apartheid especially you lost nothing but continued to enjoy the perks that came apartheid policies. Any freedom fighter will never deny the fact that white people stole land and that land should be gave back without any form of compensation

      Bjorn Lang - 2015-03-05 12:19

Thula a smash and grab approach is out the question. Educate the people as to how to USE THE LAND PRODUCTIVELY before handing it over. That way the "new owners" contribute to society effectively creating employment and PAYING TAXES. Think ahead child.

      Heather Mae - 2015-03-05 12:26

Thula Buthelezi...go back to school You dont know me You think I sat and listened to the radio in the house we rented because my parents, both working, could not afford. You think that we did not go out and fight against it. Think again boetie, think again. There were thousands of whites that stood up to apartheid; hundreds that had to leave the country because we were hunted for being against it and stood up to the inhumane ways and police brutality. I myself had family and friends flee this country. You are still in nappies and when you are out of them (if you ever graduate to being man enough to leave them behind) you will still be an idiot

      Hamish Gray - 2015-03-05 13:14

Robert Mugabe's idea is appalling, but so is the supremacist thinking that your comment oozes. It is a fallacy to believe that small scale farmers cannot produce a good yield. The irony of it though, is that in Europe today there is an increasing move back to the concept of permaculture (something that has been practiced in the so-called developing world since time immemorial) and it was they who imposed there then modern farming techniques in Africa with a single crop rota system. I am not a farmer so I cannot judge the merits of either, but it would seem that there is an increasing change-of-heart in Europe as I say. I frankly don't understand your gloating attitude of automatic superiority any more than I understand Robert Mugabe's deranged and unethical (and probably illegal if one took it before the international court) move.

But Mugabe will be dead in his expensive grave when Zimbabwe is starving because of the lack of knowledge and produce because of his racist ways of thinking. He is not helping his people. They will be suffering even more than they are already. Fleeing to other countries for help. He has destroyed the country. Look what's happened sinse he came into power. You must be stupid to believe he is a great man. He is a great man if you a racist.

his people love the way he treats them,so to hell with zimbabwens, let them starve.white people please get the hell out of that hell hole, mugabe reduced you to second class citizens.there are lots of countries that will welcome you and your much needed skills.i guarantee you zimbabwe will soon look like a barren waste land

It is a sad state of affairs but you are spot on. I would not stay in a country that despises me so very much. I truly do Love South Africa and hope never to be made to feel that way.

Diane, people refuse to learn.we can never change history.apartheid and colonialization will never be forgotten but for the good of humanity we need to move on,a great man once said,''we cannot control thoughts that come to us,but we can control what we continue to think about''.two rongs don't make a right, majority of africans are suffering from mental slavery.they need to free their minds for future generation' is a rich continent but because of hate and the needs for revenge there's no leaders divide people, they keep reminding them what white people did.yet the very same leaders have white friends overseas.

Well said Robbie.... You have been reduced to second class citizens. Get out and let it become a waist land like Haiti, 200+ years on

Just to quote pre Mugabe few days ago, "I think the farms we gave to people are too large. They can't manage them," and now suddenly he's kicking white farmers out. i believe there's something wrong with this old man because now the economy will become to a stand still and south Africa must expect the arrival of more than a million Zimbabweans coming to look for jobs

  • Lizl Scheepers - 2015-03-05 12:01

Go ahead, take the farms. We will smile at your misfortune and starvation. Vrek maar van die honger, who cares about the zimbos anyway.

  • Michael Southfrica - 2015-03-05 12:02

Oh no... Here come more starving Zimbabweans. Honestly, the SA government should be putting more pressure on Mugabe and his cronies to stop this madness. I know a whole bunch of skilled Zimbabweans who came here after the economy tanked. They're engineers, doctors, technicians and artisans now with good jobs. I can't understand how one man can be so shortsighted and selfish. That country is completely ruined and the best of the best have left for greener pastures.

I would try and reallocate now if I was in zim. He is paving the way for his wifey to take over. Bobs only worried about whites, I dont think grace gives an iota about any zimbabwean regardless of race.

      Jamie Ross - 2015-03-05 12:55

If you live in Africa it is time to relocate from Africa

      Gawie Gorrel - 2015-03-05 13:05
